Standard k not running. Camshaft sensor issues?
Discussion
Hi All,
Any help please with a now 'intermittent' fault.
2 days ago, the elise (S2) with standard K engine was running well in the summer sun.
I did short journey (2 miles), and stopped for 1/2 an hour.
When i came out, it fired then died immediately. same again, and again, etc. I gave it some gas and it fired to higer revs but immediately dropped back and stalled. No mil light at all.
So the AA man turned up.
Fault code was cam/crank speed sensor. So the crank speed was checked as we turned it over and it registered so that was dismissed. Cam sensor then, no problem!
So how come when i get it to the garage today it fired up and ran? It showed no engine fault codes via OBD, but the mil light was on! I let it get warm, switched it off and started it a few times. The mil light is now out, but i'm petrified of it stopping in the most inappropriate/dangerous place.
I'll have to get a new sensor no doubt for peace of mind (£70 bloody quid!)
But i want to ask you guys out there in the PH expert arena if anyone's come across anything similar before? I presume the sensor would fail due to excess heat over time, but i wouldn't have expected it to recommence operational service. That made me start thinking is it ECU related?
Answers on a postcard please below. Many many thanks for any advice.

i had a similar situation with my s1, turned out to be the wiring loom, small crack in the outer sheath, some moisture got in there and it was cutting out left right and center, and failing to start at times.i replaced the camshaft and crankshaft sensors before we finally found the problem. i am keeping my fingers crossed for you that its just the camshaft sensor. get it fitted asap so you can enjoy the sunshine!
The exact thing happened to me 3 weeks ago.....2 mile journey to shops...10 minutes later back to car....car starts for 1-2 secs but then cannot maintain revs and dies. Thought it might be battery but was (as you say) Camshaft position sensor. Got mine fitted at Hanger 111 (Ipswich) at a cost of £57.46 - Now all okay.
FYI: Engine Fault Code 340 - Camshaft Position Sensor Malfunction.
