I am having the sports upgrade fitted to my Type 25 (Sport 160 engine)which comprises the Janspeed sports exhaust, sports cat., ITG induction/filter and modified exhaust manifold. I am told this will push it to around 170 bhp and with some gains in mid to upper range torque.

Does anyone have any experience of these modifications and whether they really make a difference in practice (apart form the sound, of course!)?

I didnt know they did an S2 Type 25 with a 'Sport 160' engine - do you mean the VVC engine?

generally a VVC with those bolt ons will give about 160-65bhp ...to get 170-75bhp you really need some headwork too

OK the engine is basically the same as in the 111s. In fact the whole car is pretty much the same as the 111s but without the sun visors!

Apparently Lotus originally said they would only do a limited run of 50 type 25's but then decided another 25 would sell quite well so have done it as as type 25 160.

The engine is the VVC which produces 156 bhp in its standard form and the dealer reckons up to 170 bhp with the "sports" kit. So I thought if anyone with a 111s has had the sports add ons, they could tell me if they made much difference.

all cars are different...but bear in mind most reputable tuning companys like www.dvapower.com and www.race-speed.com need a bit than a few bolt ons to make 170bhp +

have a look at the race speed 175 VVC kit - it includes most of what the dealer is offering + ported head for £795+vat and fitting ..and is guaranteed to make the 175bhp ...20bhp over std...so you will notice a difference...a few bolt ons and 10bhp or so is not that noticable...except for the noise increase

Having seen what you've got pushing yours along I won't ask how you know!

By the look of the Racetech site the only major difference between what my dealer (Wilsons) is doing and the 175 kit is the modified cylinder head (which I accept is a pretty major difference). I think I'll run it with the inlet and exhaust mods initially then look at sticking the modified head on once I've stopped frightening myself.

Does it need a new ECU though cos presumably this would invalidate the Lotus warrenty?

Yep - Ive had quite a few upgrades myself ...and driven most specs/conversions along the way whilst deciding

If your car is still under warranty then dont change the head !

Wilsons are probably one of the best dealers out there - I got my car from there and my car used to go there for servicing before the warranty ran out (in 10 months/20K miles!)

Go for the exhaust/manifold/sports cat/induction kit and keep your warranty...it will sound MUCH better and will go a bit better too

If you are in the essex area then pop along to one of our twice monthly meets:

1st Monday of the month at the Anchor, near Danbury on A12

3rd Monday of the month at the Woodman, Standford Rivers, Nr Ongar

both from 7.30/8pm ish

maybe see you then

Excellent, sorted!

Danbury is a bit of a drive from Hemel Hempstead but perhaps that's the whole point?

Just need to work out a B road route then.

Cheers for the advice.

Hi Tortoise,
I have the same bolt on kits on my 120 S2 and on t saw
132,5 ps and 181 nm on the R.R. Definetly worth the money and drives very nice with a very good mid punch
and not short of breath at top end

Isn't the major difference that you're paying £1800 instead of £795 though? Sounds like an expensive upgrade for the money!

I think the £795 was for head just on exchange and they presume you already have exhaust/induction/manifold.

A manifold from anywhere is about £400 + a few hours
Exhaust is £350-400 ish + hour or 2
ITG induction is £350 + 1 hour say

so about £1150 + days labour maybe max...independants like Sinclaires www.sinclairebodyshop.co.uk charge £40+ vat an hour so £280 a day....think Wilsons is £80 + vat so £560 ish...so £1800 fitted not too far out depending on exact model of exhaust/manifold - official Lotus sourced then add £100 each to above prices

I've got an S2 111s with Titanium Manifold and Exhaust, sports induction, loads of weight reduction and a hotter CAM. My car only gets mid 175bhp with all that. The reason is the ECU cannot handle more than 10% in upgrades. If you really like having VVC then you can stick with what you've got and wait for Dave to come out with the new VVC ECU which should be ready this year. If you don't care about VVC, then blank it out with the RaceSpeed 175 kit and change the ECU.
