Hi all you crazy catz in lotus land...ok i need a b service right! so popped into williams lotus bristol, christ unfriendly or whaaaat???.
Ok asked howe much for a b service elise s1 "£370..." what the f__k!!!!!. So in short they will not be getting my hard earned cash....sweet lord above.
Did see however many lovely elises, nice orange s1 with matching hard top!!! thats a stunner also some very very nice s2's...and of course the new new new elise!!! looks horrible in yellow!!.
Also a nice yellow noble. mmmm noble..

Im thinking about takeing it to lotusbodyshop.co.uk who advertise here, when i spoke to them he seemed very keen about the cars chatted for ages to...surely people realise that just because you dont work for a main dealer doesnt mean your doing a bad job??i reckon they are even more interested in the job they are doing than the main dealer guys...

really?? Well b**ger me...never even bothered calling em cos I assumed (wrongly it wold seem) that they'd be even more expensive than London Lotus - apparently not then! I've been paying about 300 for an A service too

K. I believe stamps are important, but not so for an elise.
This is simply due to it being such a niche car.
Buyers will be petrolheads and enthusiasts and will not mind. The way i look at it is, how many of you carried out your checks and had it inspected by a specialist/dealer when you bought it? (private sale?)
If you did and everything was fine/working, would you have backed out if there was a specialist stamp and NOT a dealer? I dont think so
Get to a specialist and save yourself some money. They are often better and arent going to mess you about
Even taking it to an extreme, the money you save would more than cover the "drop in value" (if it even exists) for selling without full dealer stamps

Wilsons Lotus are a few miles from Sinclaires Lotus Specialists (my car has been/goes to both)
Wilsons have to match Sincs' prices otherwise no-one would go there - for other work though they are £79+vat an hour whereas Sincs are £39+vat
Both will give discount to SELOC members.

Nice to hear you think that, Dragstar, but I'm not totally convinced.
I service my own cars; I've lost count of the number of engines I've stripped and rebuilt (including race units) and have done nut-and-bolt rebuilds on classics for fun, so I resent the idea of paying some spotty youth £250 to change the oil and check the brake pads.
Even with meticulous records of the consumables used and the wear recorded at each service interval, I'm still expecting to take a hefty loss when I come to sell the car, just because it hasn't got dealer stamps in the book.
I don't know if I'll do enough miles to ensure that the savings on service costs outweigh the reduced value.

But there is a subtle difference between a car having NO dealer stamps and one which has had dealer stamps before, but subsequently had specialist ones.
Also YOU have done the servicing on YOUR car. When asked, i bet you mention that? If i was told that i'd be put off and would only be interested if the price was lower. BUT, an independant specialist who can independantly verify its servicing and care would not put me off. Im sure im not alone here

The car had a 'FLSH' when I bought it, but since it was only 8K miles, that didn't count for much (the previous owner, an Aircraft Inspection Engineer, had had it serviced by mileage, but had done 6-monthly oil changes himself in addition).
I agree completely that my car will be devalued because I service it myself, but once out of warranty any stamp is of no real value - it proved that the car has been into a garage and that the owner has paid a sum of money for a service, but it doesn't establish the quality or thoroughness of that service in any way...or am I just being cynical?
For what it's worth, I would respect a service history from a specialist (eg. Ragtop Roadsters or Chris Foulds) much more than a main dealer history. In my experience, the 'technicians' who work for main dealers are often only one step up from the gimps who fit exhausts and tyres for the fast-fit centres. Give me a genuine enthusiast for the marque, any day...
Its an interesting area. IMHO, specialists are better because they reach that stage, through personal interest and enthusiasm etc. Dealer techs have ambition/enthusiasm otherwise they'd be on the dole! but still there is a difference!

I have to say I am in split minds on this one. My warranty runs out in a couple of months, just after the next A service. Do I continue going to a dealer "just for the stamps", or taking it to specialists 'cos it is cheaper?
I have to agree with Drag on the fact that if I were to buy a second hand car (Elise or not) and the owner had done the servicing I would prob walk away. Nothing personal here Mr S, just that I would have more peas of mind if it had at least some form of stamp on it.
Bogie, thanks for pointing out the reason for the price of Wilsons, couldn't work out why they were so cheap. I would have to say in their praise that I wil be taking mine back down there from Leeds for the next service, not only because of the price, but also the service was just so damn good!!
