I was wondering if anyone can give me some advice on getting insured on an Elise S1.

I'm 22 and was looking for a sub 7k mile fully comp policy to start at the end of July...any suggestions? Most of the quotes I have had so far for fully comp have been around the £2000 mark which is ridiculous

I realise that its a bit of a tall order on a group 17 car at my age, but was wondering if there is a club recognised insurance deal?

Thanks for any info.

Ben.

7k's a funny number as far as policies are concerned from my understanding.. I thnk you'd have better luck sub 5k... Performance Marque did my old Porsche at about £300 for less than 5000 per year.. but I was 25 at the time.

Cheers
Matt.

If you want to reduce your premiums, try offering to increase the amount of excess you are willing to pay, say £500. Also like the previous post 7000 miles is an odd number, insurance companies from my experience tend to work in 5K blocks. So try a 5k annual limit.

Try the "Esteem package" (01483) 706060 or james.caton@ars.aon.co.uk , they offer special rates for Lotus club members although it doesn't include track day cover as standard.

The best quote I got was from Norwich Union Direct but I won't tell you the quote as it will make you sick .

lol@sick, you're probably right - and I expect I'll get upset too!!

I see what you mean about the mileage - I think I meant 7500 as thats the limit on my existing car. I'll bear that phone number in mind when I get some more quotes.

Thanks guys!

Thanks.

My insurance is around £1000 from Peugeot insurance. I have 5 years no claims (age 22) on my 96 P reg Standard Elise. I think that Peugeot is linked to direct line somehow as the quotes i got from them both were identical. Direct line might be worth a look - you can get quotes on line in under 10 mins.

Well I'll be damned!

Directline.com: £1164.45 Fully comp, 3 years no claims, up to 7k miles, garaged, 22yo with an excess of £450.

I wont grumble at that at all! Very impressed. Beats every quote I have had so far.

Excellent stuff!

Tescos are usually about 10% cheaper & are owned by Direct Line.

Tesco's quote for the same details was £1292.55, I make that a difference of about £128.10. Not exactly a large difference but I guess that 11% is the figure they plump on top for brokering the Directline service. I'm with the Direct Line quote so far.

Thanks again.

My circumstances arnt quite the same being 38, but have an err unfortunate claims record. Was recommended to Tesco but they were significantly beaten by Elephant (web only).

In a nutshell I was at fault in the total loss of my 98 Elise, but insured a 111, modified and of greater value for the same money I paid last year with zero NCB.

Give them a try.

Nasty. But thanks anyhow. I am quite gobsmacked by just how these quotes vary - be ineterested to know just how they make their decisions.

Ben - that seems about right with Direct Line, I am with them and paid about the same - they were the cheapest I could find.

For what it is worth...

I have been looking to buy an S2 and so have been trying to get quotes. So far Direct Line / Tesco / Privelidge (all RBOS) have come up at around £1250 (22, Protected 4 years no claims)

Funnily enough, things like garaging (-£30) and milage made little difference to the quote. It may be worth "tweaking" your details any you may find that you can have a higer milage for a almost identical premium.

Originally I was worried about the garaging, but I'd rather declare it as not garaged and pay an extra £30 a year for the privelidge of not having to lock it in a garage every night just to make my insurance vaild - lets face it, if some scroat is going to take it - a flimsy garage door is probably not going to stop them.

Hiya, yeah I have been thinking of playing with the details to see what affect adjusting the annual mileage would have. So far I have given myself the estimate of 7000; work mileage alone is well within that - but lets face it, an Elise has to be driven!

It's a mixed blessing for me in that where we live it is impossible to park outside, in fact if I did that I'd block off a country road lol, worth a laugh at least. Like you say, if someone wants a car bad enough they'll just come and take it flimsy garage door or not.

Actually, the security aspect of the Elise has just started to worry me now. I've heard that the S1s haven't scored too highly on the anti-theft awards, anyone know any different?

Thanks again.
