Just got back from a drive and towards the end it sounded like there was a flock of seagulls in my engine! The higher the revs the louder it is.

I know this is really vague but any ideas what it could be?! I'm crap at technical things and I dont want to drive it incase it gets any worse! I can't afford a big repair bill right now

Any help appreciated...Cheers...James

Just checked the oil and theres some in there but its very very low I think that may have something to do with the noise from my engine.

Just hoping theres not any long term damage done

A flock of seagulls! sounds like an eric cantona poem!
seriously though if you had oil on the dipstick then its not too much of an issue as it is about a litre of oil between max and the end of the stick so theres about 3.5 litres left.
If you checked it recently and it was fine then obviously thats not good, but if your not in the habit of checking it() could of burnt of over time.
As for the noise "flock of seagulls" is not very discriptive but if it goes up with revs it could be induction or exaust.
Get it checked out m8

Cheers Alki

Just topped up the oil anyway as it needed doing

The Seagulls getting alot worse now and I really don't want to drive it in case it gets worse but I need to get it to a garage! I'm guessing the RAC and AA wouldn't really be much help?! Anyone had any experience with them at all?!

it's a simple rover engine

AA/RAC will be more than adequate

they're only crap for things like suspension etc

IMHO

Just had a mechanic round who says it sounds like a bearing seizing up. Says its not safe to drive and that I need to get it back to where I got it from which is about an hour away

Not happy at all. Looks like its gonna end up costing alot guys

Yeah she's still under warranty but I have to get her to the dealers on a trailer which will cost quite a bit I expect. So broke at the minute aswell!

You think they should come and collect my car?!

cant remember the exact warranty terms and conditions, if you have a good relationship with your dealer i'm sure they can sort something out

Sorry to hear about your engine problems (at least it's still under warranty though). I don't have a lotus warranty on mine but the Honda one I do have (I bought it from a Honda dealer) includes breakdown cover. If the Lotus one doesn't I think you can join the AA/RAC etc at any time and then basically call them out straight away. Might not be any cheaper than getting it towed, but at least you'll be a member for the next year if anything else goes wrong.

I've been looking out for you at work but you must go in real early, which I erm don't.

Yeah think your right about the AA, I'll give them a call tomorrow! I'm gonna ring the dealer aswell and try to get something sorted. Hope I'm not without her for too long

I saw your Elise about two weeks ago and went to have another look! I work shifts (unfortunately) so am there at different times

Take it easy...James

Right...Took my car into Cd Bramall and they said they'd have a look for me so I left it with them for about 3hrs while my girlfriend and I went shopping.

Got back and they told me it was the alternator bearing and that its not really safe to drive but they can get it sorted for me by Thursday. So asked for a courtesy car, 'sorry there all out at the moment' great so now what are we going to do?!

We ended up having to pay £50 to hire a Fiat Seciento (however you spell it) to get us back home while they have my car My girlfriend was not happy at all!

Great way to spend my 23rd birthday

Really takes some getting used to driving, feels like I'm in a van! All my family and friends were pissing themselves laughing

Anyway thats how I've left it now, just hope theres no more problems. Looking at the new Elises, look alot more finished in my opinion and I want one now really bad!

Cheers lads

James:

take the fiat and thrash the f**k out of it.

If i get a courtesy car with only enough petrol to get to the nearest petrol station then ill return it with near bald tyres

Hand brake turns, sir? why that devil not!

I wouldnt do it to you Mustard

They should make sure there's enough petrol in it, because if my cars in their garage, im doing them a favour, not the other way around.

At very least they should provide me with a way to get home without more cost

Plus it makes you feel better
