I may do the stelvio pass coming back but I'm thinking more about the GF and making sure she's happy (what's that? 'leave her at home' you say?) I'm not planning on track style driving anyway as the gendarmes might take my wheels and tyres off me! Any suggestions on the right tyre for the job?

I'm going to the South of France soon in my Elise and wanted your thoughts/experiences on the best tyres for comfort/cruising?
It seems a bit futile going all that way (and back) on 48's.
Edit to add: thank's in advance.
How about Kumho KU31s, they seem to have a bit of a following for both S1s and S2s on Seloc? I put a full set on mine around a week ago and they feel pretty good to me, especially in the wet, though I haven't had much chance to drive in the dry yet or play with pressures. I only got them as a 'knock around' set after looking up 100s of tyre threads (on Seloc), Toyo T1-Rs are another option, I may go for 48's when/if the weather gets better! If you don't mind the money Yoko AD07s will probably be the best tyre for you, though they're a fair chunk more £. It seems a bit futile going all that way (and back) on 48's.

R1-Rs have got a fantastic write up.
I don't rate the Kuhmos ( lots of others do though).
Toyo T1-Rs would be good for what you're planning. You loose a bit of steering sharpness due to their soft sidewalls but you gain in ride comfort. They're also excellent in the wet.
Hankook also do a tyre that is supposed to work well on the Elise (Search on Seloc and you'll find the type).
Yokohama Advan Neovo LTS from your friendly Lotus dealer.
Also a new Yokohama - AD08 but son't know much about them.
You pays your money......

I had TR-1s fitted to the Exige in January as the AO48s were struggling a bit in the snow, In general the car seems less skittish when crossing white lines,
Grip in this weather seems about the same, and seeing as last years total was 4 pairs of rear 48s, Im hoping they last a bit longer too, so thumbs up all round.
