i plan on doing some donuts/slides/sideways driving later today at an empty car park.

just wanted to know whats the best way to balance the throttle (for when i want to go sideways)??

as soon as i throw opposite lock on do i:

(a) blip the throttle constantly

or

(b) hold a constant rev, matching it to road speed?

if i have said anything stupid, feel free to

Usually to keep it in a slide under control you 'feather' the throttle.

It's a dynamic system you're trying to stabilize, so you need constant adjustments of the throttle.

But.. Practice is simply the only way to do it. Just try it out and see what works for you.

You'll totally fudge it up the first while and then probably get over-enthusiastic and spin out completely.. But after a while you start to get a 'feel' for it.

Bye, Arno.

(yes.. I'm a nerd )

Don't blip it or saw at the steering wheel. Thats what crap drivers do! You see a master and its very few movements at all. Also in an Elise if you feel the back end coming around too far, then don't stamp on the throttle. It won't help!

You can't do donuts in an Elise either as there is no LSD. You'll find you can do a 180 but then it stops dead pretty much.

As to balancing it in a slide being a piece of piss, you are clearly a better driver than me!

Hmmm - the standard elise's I had I found very difficult but the 340R is easier.

Power is one factor but on an icey Carpark you should have no problems...if you have enough space!

Well apparently you can do donuts on gravel etc, but I've never managed to sustain one in the liz on tarmac, although granted I didn't try that long! (and I'm not taking my car on gravel - would you lend me yours? )

You liz can definitely be balanced in a slide, its just a pretty difficult car to do it with (short wheelbase, low polar moment of inertia etc.) Also to set it sliding on normal tarmac you have to be good with the steering inputs and detecting the back end coming out, you can't just clarkson it and gun the throttle (which is why he can't drift a liz).

Theres actually a really good drift dvd out now but a Japanese drift champion and it describes lots of ways of drifing cars. The one that works in the liz is basically the hardest of the lot though.

So did you miss me?

p.p.s. I think Bogie's done more first lotus days than me!

Dan, using the wheel to induce oversteer into a corner is called a "feint" and one of 6 techniques taught for drifting by the DRIFT KING - Keiichi Tsuchiya. (do a google search on this guy! or try www.driftclub.com/DriftKing.htm). He has made a DVD (best motoring produced) called the "drift bible" The DVD is a must watch!

try: www.dukevideo.com/products/3676.htm

I've used his techiques in both my e46M3 and my s2 111s- naturally on a dry road "power-over" won't be possible on an elise- I've tried on a hair pin, but "lifting off" can do it, as can "shift- locking"

lotsa fun- get out there draggy baby!

anyway, got to the car park (extremely slowly, braking with gears etc).

when i got there, there wasnt much ice left but...

i planted it, and it just spun 90degrees

i wouldnt donut (just 180s...hardly that) but i did manage 1 slide! for about 5 seconds. best way for me was to blip the throttle.

couldnt do it again though. im ordering that dvd!

Yeah the 'drift bible' is what I was referring to.

His feint is basically a scandinavian flick, but you don't need to do that to set the Elise drifting. The technique I was taught involes left foot breaking to transfer the weight to the front, turning in sharply (ish) (without the flick/feint) and then balancing with the throttle. Obviously its the hardest way to do this stuff though as you need a really good feel for the weight balance of the car. Its what Gavan Kershaw was doing on that topgear slot where Clarskon was bitching about understeer, and Gavan was drifting away.

I reckon if you can slide an Elise consistently you'll be able to slide anything

I can't stop the damn thing sliding the back out in the wet. Ok I could if I wanted to . Never had the balls to really try and hold the drift though. I get too nervous about a glass fibre, concrete rendezvous.

yeah i panic when my back end comes around.

the first time it did, i lifted off

learnt that is a good way to increase my slide!

Never had any problem with a slide in the S2 plenty of right foot and steer into the slide until the engine runs out and you snap back into cronic over steer panic & let off then grin and wave whilst you pretend to everyone that you did actualy want to do a U turn!
