Probably a numpty question to some folk, but my elise, over the last week, has started to do the classic squealy-belt noise upon startup from cold, you know the one, loads of cars do it.

Question, is it simply a belt needs adjusting or tightening or something.

Hoping to find the answer and avoid another hefty bill,

Thanks in advance

Sean.

It'll be the alternator belt requiring tightening or perhaps replacing if it's getting on a bit. If you're relying on a garage to do it it's a 30 minute job to re-tension.

Thanks GKP, I'm going to wait a week or so and if its still doing it get it checked out (seems to have started after a very wet run out we did, so it could be linked to that)

If you do just tighten it, get a spare and be ready for it to break.

In my experience, if belts have stretched enough to start squealing, it usually means that the inernal reinforcement has started to break down and re-tensioning them just hastens their demise.
