insurance advice please
Discussion
What insurance companies can anyone recommend and how will I get the best deal?
Purchase of an 111s is imminent but I want to keep the tank (1.9 diesel) I currently drive also. I am *ahem* over 30, female (obviously I hope), full no claims and no points etc. Will probably alternate between the cars for work but use the lizzie as much as I can on a weekend. Don't expect to do mega miles in it so quite prepared to give restricted mileage a go if it makes a difference.
The insurance company I use at present quoted me about 700 quid for the elise with protected no claims. But then I have to start afresh with the diesel.
Any advice appreciated before I start the long trawl

Hi PPS,
the best place is www.tesco.com but ONLY if you are willing to fit a tracker.
they are very good, but no ideas on what they are like in a claim.
others you could try include, footman jones, direct line (quite good sometimes), lotus esteem and liverpool victoria. Esteem can be very good, depending on what kind of neighbourhood/area you live in plus a dicount is given for being a lotus-club member.
the lads will be along with more details im sure.
happy hunting!
LADS...if there is a female on-board, does that mean i have to tone it down?
NEVER!

I put all my no claims on the Lotus as this was the highest insurance category. Also went for the lotus membership to get the 10% discount from Esteem. My 309 is a runabout too, if you have full no claims there's no need to put limited mileage with Esteem as premium counts for any amount of miles. I then found a company that gave me a one years discount on the 309 (quoteline direct) taking into account the 5yrs on the lotus.
Fortunately I have not had the 205 on the road for the last year so havent had any discussions with 3 cars at once. dont fancy that....

Driven the engine in Celica & Corolla, biggest critism is the lack of torque, but lot less of an issue in an Elise! Engine loves to have the ar5e spanked off it
Anyway back on topic to avoid thread highjack

Everyone seems to go for tesco's
but I found www.elephant.co.uk to be cheaper ( not got full no-claims? ), and not require a tracker fitting either...... brilliant. Free quote online, so no harm done.
They were even pretty quick when I had a little argument with a curb - so they ain't cowboys

Slightly off-topic, but do you want to cheer us all up by telling us how much a 14 year old student in Manchester City centre has to pay to insure a 111S, Dragstar?
And who do you use - presumably anyone willing to touch a risk like that with even a very long bargepole would probably insure Penelope for about 35 pence?
Tescos mate
circa £5k
that was with a no-fault claim and 1 years NCB, @ 19.
however, i still needed a nudge nudge, contact to take me at Tescos
i pleaded for about an hour and they accepted me with a £700ish excess.
City centre is not really an issue as i have private parking, CCTV, 24/7 "security" guard (read: fat ba5tard who couldnt catch a snail driving a VX) and an electronic gate/fob entry system.

Hell's teeth, Dragstar, that's about a quid a mile at the amount of mileage I do in the Elsie in a year!
Not quite sure, but I think mine might be insured through Footman James :'standard'(ish)S1, parking on street in Chorley, Lancs, Cat 1 alarm/immobiliser is the only requirement. Can't remember the exact premium; I think it was about £450 but as second car (I have a company car and a couple of other toys as well).
Nice to know there are some advantages to being an old bugger (35 this year)
I know your a bit of a nutter and all, but are you really TEN times more likely to have an accident than me?!

I doubt it
im limited to 5k miles per year.
since june 2003, ive done a smidgen over 2k, mainly motorway miles.
i doubt ill do another 3k by june, so money well made i suppose.
next year will be the same-ish, yet i doubt ill see a reduction in premium.
what can you do? drive a VX?
you only live once...

Yep, it's obligatory to drive like a complte W***** in a Bimmer. I think they send the heavies round from the factory if they catch you NOT tailgating in the fast lane at 120 whilst flashing your headlaps at the person in front and talking on your mobile phone.
I ran a Fiat X1/9 when I first passed my test (don't laugh - these were the days before the MR2, so the only alternative if you wanted something cheap with 2 seats was a rusty Spitfire), and had progressed via a Westie to a Cateringvan by the time I was your age. Don't remember the insurance being anything like that stupid, though. I think the X1/9 was about £450 in 1986 and the Westie and Caterham were substantially CHEAPER (only car, unlimited mileage, too!) - about £240 a year rings a bell. £450 felt like a lot of money, but £5K per year is about 1/3rd of the average annual salary for someone your age, surely? I guess £450 was about a month's salary for me, back then.

Getting back on topic, Penelope, with the sort of use you have in mind, a specialist limited mileage policy should do the job. NCB is usually irrelevant on these (it is a condition of the policy that you have access to another 'main' car as well).
I would guess that you are a slightly better risk than me (I'm male and have a few points for speeding, but no claims ever and full NCB on my main car). I was getting quoted £470 on an S1 111S, but I couldn't find one that hadn't been abused, so settled for a standard S1 in the end, which was a bit cheaper to insure.
For what it's worth, Tesco's were NOT competitive for me (I think they quoted about £650 and insisted on a tracker), but that might have been 'cos the car would live on the street (garage/drive occupied by the other toys!).
