Hi,

Maybe a bit of an odd question this but.....

I am considering the purchase of an Exige S 240, I would however like to able to add a 19 year old to the insurance. Has anyone done this? Is it possible without paying a ridiculous premium? Obviously any pointers to insurers who would be worth contacting will be gratefully received.

I am 40 live in rural Northamptonshire, he has his own car, insured in his name, this is for occasional use only, if that makes any difference to the answers.

Though i wouldn't be so rude as to question your sanity ......I think you might find the most cost effective solution (if you can get insurance) is for special one day /weekend cover for your son from one of the specialist providers. I'm told this is available via a web search but i haven't used it myself though one of my sons has. I can get more details if required.

Actually not my son, long story.........

I suppose I should have mentioned the 19 year old in question holds an International C Race Licence and is also an ARDS Licensed Race Instructor to avoid any of the inevitable and otherwise justifiable doubts as to my mental state wink

I have thought about looking into single day insurance but feel the need may be more frequent than would make this an ideal solution to the problem assuming it can be done at a relatively sensible cost on an annual policy.

Thanks,

Robin

Hi there I would try specialists like CCI, Richard Egger,Hagerty they will probably take into account there driving experience and additional licenses.

Also I got my first policy with Elephant and they were very good on price with the Elise.

You have to be 25 with CCI. They won't put my mrs on mine (she's 23).

I'm only 28 but you would have to be nuts to let a 19 year old drive a 240 exige. Its just too fast for someone that young. Unless they have been karting/ involved with motorsport from a young age, I wouldnt do it...

FWIW, I've been driven by an 18 year old, Craig Dolby, in a 240R in the wet and he drove way, way faster and more controlled than I could have in those conditions, and I have a lot of experience of track driving.

Does the profession 'Racing driver' actualy lower your insurance?

Best advice is to call round the specialists and see what they say His experience should help though so give it a go biggrin

Doesn’t being an ARDS instructor connect him to the motor industry such that most insurers wont consider cover? (Or does that only affect motor traders, or does it only rule out high street insurers anyway?)

...so I can be of absolutely no help here, but would be very interested to find out how you get on... thumbup

Mike…

Ding. I went out with Craig at Cadwell Park on a slightly damp track. I have never experienced driving like it. Frankly if I had instruction every day for the next 10 years I would NEVER get that good. He was taking the gooseneck 20mph faster than I can on the same setup. He just found grip at a level that beggared belief.

I am sure someone would be prepared to offer insurance given the lad's driving credentials - might still be worth contacting CCI and outlining his experience etc.

Regular insurers will just take the view that your trying to insure the car on behalf of the youngster so will charge as if he were the main driver.
As others have said best bet would be with one of the specialists.
