Elise Luggage Racks
Discussion
Slightly late reply here....
I have an Eliseparts rack for my S1 and it's great in that it allows you to take loads more stuff with you. It's now made 3 trips to Le Mans carrying tents, chairs etc. However it does have a noticable effect on how the car drives with all that weight up high over the rear end so you do have to take it easy on the drive over there.

No, most of the luggage is over the boot section rather than on top of the engine. It's great for light-but-bulky stuff like folding chairs but not so good with a massive 4 man tent lashed to the top. I've used it to carry a suitcase too which was fine, and it all seems perfectly stable at European motorway type speeds too.

If you'd be happy with a boot bag (with retaining straps) designed to fit on the back of an Elise instead of a rack, there was one advertised in a recent issue (?early/mid June 2009) of Classic Car magazine

Thanks
How do the front fixings mount onto the car?
Remove the roll-bar cover and rear screen and the rear fixings drop in before being held down by the screen, the front fixings are held down with two large suction pads onto the rear clam. How do the front fixings mount onto the car?
My dad is a metal worker so I am toying with the idea of getting him to make me some fixings and knock up my own.
I was having a play last night and thought they would hook under the clam. I have heard stories of the rear screen breaking (without a rack). Does it feel secure? Do you still have the original glass or have you got a polycarbonate screen?

Just found this: http://www.boot-bag.com/elise.htmI did this. Not aesthetically perfect but practical.
I bought an engine cover on ebay and bought a luggage rack that bolts to the engine cover only. (No holes in the clam.) I then got a hard luggage set from Argos...when you get them they all fit inside each other when empty. I bolted the medium sized case to the rack (the big one looked comedy big.) The small case contains all our clothes and things and it just fits snuggly in the one on the car. It's weatherproof, there's enough room for towels and things in the medium case even with the small case inside. You leave it padlocked when you stop for lunch and when you arrive at your destination you whip out the small case with wheels and leave the lock off the one on the car so that the tealeaves can see there's nothing in it. It withstood 80mph no probs with no overheating etc. When your holiday is over, the original engine cover goes back on again.
Oh and I sprayed it gloss black as it's a neutral colour and I could sell the whole gig separately should I ever sell the car.

What a bloody good idea! Especially the spare engine cover, well thought out!I bought an engine cover on ebay and bought a luggage rack that bolts to the engine cover only. (No holes in the clam.) I have used those bags that you vacuum the air out of , you can get loads in the boot and behind the seats, that combined with that luggage rack you could go away for more than a few days, you do get some stange looks when you ask to borrow a Dyson when you want to pack up for the return trip though.
