Is there a special technique for refilling the rad
Discussion
Yep, jack the front of the car up and open the bleed valve (on the passenger side IIRC). It's really either a clam-off job or take out the wheel arch liner on the passenger side and personally I'd get it done by a pro as apparently they are a nightmare to bleed (according to the specialist who did mine).

Think we've been here before recently!
If you've got long arms and thin fingers you can reach in from the bonnet opening and along the left of the rad and reach the bleed valve with no probs.

I couldn't remember who it was though
They are not really a nightmare . . .
raise the NEARSIDE front specifically as that helps de-gas the rad when you open the bleed valve . . . which is easy to access from the wheelarch . . . wheels at full LEFT lock . . . not right as you would think . . .
There is also a bleed valve on the engine coolant rail at the gearbox end of the engine, look for the wee 8mm bolt in a black pipe . . . you should check this runs coolant too . . .
Total time to bleed from empty ~ 20 minutes . . .
