Finally the requirement to have 4 seats instead of 2 means that the liz has to go, whilst it's already advertised on here, I wanted some advice on a private sale as the last car I sold was for 600 quid cash!

Bit worried about test pilots, funny money etc., any advice and reassurance gratefully received!

accept only a bankers draft. price it reasonably as if there is no interest after 2 weeks, itll take a massive tumble in price.

could try autotrader, but why not try top marques? (same company i know).

or www.seloc.org.

beware of test-pilots but, how they dress etc can be deceptive, and you could lose your sale if you refuse (a test drive).

good luck with your sale

Don't rush into advertising with Autotrader unless you're in a hurry. You've got a good chance advertising here and on other Lotus forums first, and no chance of those robbing bastards "CarData" getting your number and hassling you every day.

When it comes to giving test drives, trust your instincts on who is a timewaster and who isn't, and never hand over the keys unless you're sitting in the car.

When it comes to the sale, be very wary of fake bankers draughts or bouncy cheques. Basically, see the cleared funds in your account before you hand over the keys. A genuine punter should be happy to accompany you to the bank to pay a bankers draught in, for example.

When I bought my Elise I transferred the money online into the sellers account and he waited until it showed in his account before letting me take the car... this is actually not really a good idea, but I knew the bloke so it was OK!

Oh, and if you get any interest from anyone in Africa, ignore it!

It's not that advisable to allow uninsured people a test drive either. Get them to take out a temp policy or add them to your policy and charge them the excess.

although i see your point, i cant help but think that this will put people off. i would put me off.

i mean, somebody wants to buy your car (in a way, doing you a favour) and you charge him to drive it for say 20 minutes, when he may not buy it at all?

id think, "look elsewhere".

if he brings an existing insurance policy then he is covered 3rd party.

simply get him to sign a form saying he will repair ANY damage caused.

this will stop him being deterred (or her! )

Well I didn't drive mine as I wasn't insured fully comp and the seller said I had to be which is fair. I got it inspected and the inspector drove it and reported back - it was a condition of sale that the the report was clear.

If I was selling mine I would do the same and if that's a problem then fine, I'll wait for the next punter.

As for letting someone drive it 3rd party only

depends how quick you need to sell.

if i wanted a quick sale, then i wouldnt have any qualms, over allowing a person to drive my car, 3rd party, ASWELL as a "contract" in which he undertakes to pay for any damage caused. isnt that a simple form of insurance?

whats wrong with that?

God those buggers at CarData are driving me mental! I must have had about ten calls from the gits.

I've had quite a lot of responses via www.findit.co.uk too, that might be worth a try?

Cheers all, I'm not in a big rush to sell, so I'm going to go through the forums route for a bit...

Have to say that I wouldn't be letting anyone drive my car on 3rd party insurance unless it was close to a deal (and then I'd probably just add them to my policy for a tenner or whatever), and then they wouldn't be allowed to do any 'spirited' driving, I am happy to drive 'em round to see what the car will do, but them driving is strictly going to be to listen for noises / pedal and steering feel etc.
