I've only test drove one S2 (the one I now own) but I was quite shocked at the brakes. I know they dont have servos, but I wasn't expecting the complete lack of bite they have. From what I know about the history of the car, they are on original pads and have original cross-drilled discs.

After driving an Elise S1 with MMC discs, I was amazed at the difference. Felt almost servoed compared to my car. Brakes felt sharp, consistent, less spongey and seemed to require less effort.

Do other S2 owners notice the same or is it just my car ? I dont think they are that bad, but definately the weakest point in the cars performance, certainly I dont feel I can get gut wrenching stopping power out of them. Your views much appreciated.

Could be glazed pads. Happens when all you do is gentle braking or brake lightly from high speed (so they're being used but only a little).

Wait until the weather drys up and take it out for a thrash and really work the brakes by stopping hard a few times (obviously do this in a sensible place).

Just a thought but are drilled disks standard? If not then the brakes might be running too cool?

Yeah, I agree with Cuzza, give the brakes a bloody good thrashing, and I mean really really hard braking from 60 to nothing, several times. It's fun and it might fix your problem.

Obviously make sure you're on a quiet dry road with plenty of room, and be careful not to lockup and slide into a field!

Glazed pads ... hadn't though of that. Thanks. I'm off to Donnington this w/e if it dont rain so hopefully will give the brakes a good seeing to.

I have a Sports Tourer ... I presumed cross-drilled discs were standard on those. hmmm ... maybe i'm wrong.

Shakman - read the VX vs S2 thread a few down - I entirely agree with you...have been whgineing about my cars brakes since I got it nearly 3 years ago! Am about to change the pads to something else and see if that helps.

Thrashing them hard definitely does improve matters...but they're still relatveiyl rubbish IMO....

Just read the other post. So Night what can we do to fix the brakes without spending a heap of money?

Steel braided hoses ?
Pagid Pads ?
Different Brake Fluids?

My brakes improved when I put braided hoses on, I then went on to fit Pagid pads and EBC discs (bit more moolah for that though).

Wouldn't change the discs until they wear out. Pagids should have better bite though.

MMC apparently just have nicer feel though, until they get wet...

Agreed, I didn't make myself clear. I replaced the pads with Pagids when my front pads needed replacing, and they ate through my original Lotus discs alarmingly quickly, at which point I then replaced the discs too.

I have Pagid RS42s, braided hoses and SRF fluid and it is a good improvement...especially in the wet...but still not in 911 brake territory

Well, just did my 1st track day at Donnington ... wow ... absolutely awesome track.

Anyway, lots of 100mph down to second gear action seems to have done the trick (got rid of the glazing). Brakes were awesome on the track ... loads of feel, and never once faded. However, back on the road, yep, although better, still feel they have not enough bite. New pads I think only way forward!
