I know most of you think im nuts, but can you install an auto tran into an early elise??? ya see i love the elise but im disabled in the left hand (to a degree) so im unable to obtain my manual licence. What i would like to do is to buy a second hand early elise (97-98) then have a shop install it??? any idea if this can be done and the cost of it, any help would be great

Maybe the "funny" sequential auto box from the MGF would fit? It is the same engine after all isn't it?

There's quite a few K-Series engined cars that have an auto box. But I think the limiting factor with an Elise would be space needed for it.

I've heard of an Auto TVR Griffith converted for similar reasons so anything's possible.

so the lotus elise uses the same engine as the mgf, hmmm that might work, even if space is abit limited. i might be able to use that since after all both are mid engine, i dont really see why not, thats for the help

Try contacting these guys in germany:

www.brandes-dschuedow.de/start.html

They sell the Esthi V6 Elise, but I know they also did several with the normal K-series and a CVT box from an MGF.

Perhaps they can give you some info on the conversion and it's parts.(BTW.. probably easiest to source a complete engine+gearbox+ECU from an automatic MGF)

Bye, Arno.

Actually, Evil, I think you might have spotted a market, there. The gearchange on the Elise is prety shitty at best, so you're not mussing much by fitting an automatic.

Alternatively, if you can afford it, the Quaiffe sequential box would be very simple to convert to a push button/paddle system (using solenoids, like some bike engined single-seaters ought to be an option) and would probably be regarded as a bonus by almost anyone.

You can improve the std shift vastly for about £150 spent on the Elise Parts quick shift and gear linkage kit.
