what temp does your elise run at?
Discussion
For me
Normal temp when running at m'way speeds in winter 82
Normal temp when running at m'way speeds in summer 85-87
Heats up rapidly when stationary in traffic, but then cools down relatively quickly when moving again.
In the summer the fans will often cut in when stuck in traffic, cuts in at 104 and then cuts off at 99.
The system is pressurised so that no damage is done when running at these temps, as Bogie says get worried only when over 105 if the cooling fan has not cut in.

craig..sounds like you've got a MAJOR problem. that dealer is talking crap. this happened to me and cost around £200 to sort out.
HA HA JUST KIDDING!!
sounds normal, absolutely no probs.
my normal temp is about 78 which is lower than any other i've heard...they all vary greatly.
chill out, dont worry.
had you going there didnt i?

S1 111s
A steady 84 in normal condition
Goes up to 86-89 when queing
Has gone up to 98 in queing in peak summer - never heard the fan come on though ? -doh !
Mine's similar...84 (85-87 in traffic) and I've never heard the fan yet - although I bought mine late Summer.
Anyone had this situation? Bled the radiator and return pipe last weekend as per the Lotus manual. It recommends getting the engine temp up to around 65 with the header tank cap off, and then revving the engine at 2000 rpm until the fan cuts in at around 90 odd. Tried this for ten minutes and the temp wouldn't climb over 88! Should I be panicked by this?

Is'nt it just a psychological problem of having a digital temp readout? Lets face it, in any other car, how often do you EVER look at the temp gauge?
My Audi A3 1.8T runs in the mid 90s all the time.
I am considering covering up the temp gauge and putting an analog device in instead. It's just too damn distracting the way it is now.

yep - and where the stack is getting its reading from is different to the ECU...which is controlling the fan. When I was at Emerald on the RR the ECU was reporting coolant temp 3-5 degrees lower than the stack and it was a lot more steady...I think the digital display jumping up and down in front of you makes you paranoid about HGF etc
Dont worry about it and enjoy the car - it can go at any mileage if youve got a dodgy one. Symptoms vary but generally engine overheating, white smoke from exhaust that smells of coolant, mayonaise type residue under the oil cap and coolant if water and oil are mixing.

Hi all,
My last s2, has a 12 litre cooling circuit and runs at
84 c on motorway 95-100 in the traffic, fan kicks in at
102. Definetly seems to overheat less than my previous
s2 that was fitted with a 82 c thermostat. IN my experience a lower temp thermostat in useful to drop a bit the temp. in normal running condition but useless
if you are jammed in the traffic. I've also owned an
Exige and was a total nightmare, in the traffic i saw
also 110+ with engine pinking and kangooring.
Cheers
Roberto
