when reversing my gearbox seems to sometimes make a whining noise. It never seems to happen when the car is cold and when it does then generally if I take it out of reverse and then re- engage it stops.

Anyone got any ideas what this might be..? is it just because it's not properly engaged or something more sinister?

From time to time my 135 gearbox emits some of the strangest sounds also in reverse and forward. After warming up it settles down. The dealer here said it was normal. Anyone have a way to check this out before bringing it to the dealer.

The Elise PG1 gearbox is usually no noisier than any other car gearbox (they are all noisy) however the lack of soundproofing makes it sound worse than it is.

You need to get someone who knows elises to have a listen, some 'boxes are noisier than others, eg. the one is my Elise is one of the noisiest I've heard, but it's been like that for >50K miles so I'm not concerned . . .

found out what it was....the handbreak cable was getting stuck on the rear break caliper when hot and the noise was it working loose when reversing...not tooexpensive to fit...apart from the fact the garage noticed the breaks needed changing as well...
