S2ooz,

Insurance was a pain for me when I got my Elise. I think they objected to me being 23 at the time!

When I rang round there seemed to be some wildly varying prices varying from £2K down to £900 so it really pays to phone around. If you are surfing about try Directline.com and Privilege.com since they gave me the best quotes. I've also heard good things about Tesco.com and Endsleigh..

As for your Alarm, hasn't the present owner/dealer given you the Alarm fitting certificate with the model No? If not, why not?!! For most of the insurance companies you'll have to state that you have a Cat 1 alarm fitted and you'll need to send the certificate off to them as proof before the Theft cover comes into effect.

I hope you get everything sorted and have some real fun in your Lotus.

I hope to get my first Elise (s2) in the next 3 - 4 months. My insurance quotes also varied wildly from:
£1200 - direct line to
£3200 - Tesco!!!
Tesco didn't have the Elise 2 in their database or something so they quoted me for the 135 I think (?).
Directline were my best quote but I still think this is steep - I am 28, 4 yrs no claims, no accidents etc....usual clean record.
I will keep trying mind you.
Even Lotus Esteem Insurance were around £2K !
Good luck.

Ahagerty,

Don't mention that it's an Elise Mk2 to the insurance company since they'll take it as a specialist model - the phone operators get easily confused!

Just state what year it was made and that it's a bog standard Elise, if it is, with no mods. This isn't to trick the insurance company, far from it, just keep it simple for them.

Then just maybe this will affect the quote. Also keeping the car in a garage also dramatically decreases the premium.

Good Luck!!

If you don't know what alarm it's got or don't have a certificate then take it too a garage and get them to inspect it and write a letter.

Think twice before paying for protected NCD. It's expensive and not usually transferrable between insurers. If you are unlucky enough to have a claim they'll keep your NCD but load the premium anyway because you've claimed, and you have no NCD to take elsewhere

I eventually had to go with Direct Line for my Elise Mk2 insurance. £1250 approx but that did include my girlfriend who is only 24 to drive it.

My 2nd nearest quote was Tesco at £1700. Most came in at £2000! Maybe this area I am in has a bad reputation. ( Glasgow ).

I am 28, 4 yrs no claims, clean record etc, car is parked in street ( not main road ).
