after reading the hgf/coolant thread, i thought i'd check mine...no problem there (above the minimum when warm and cold, and engine runs at about 78 degrees).

i thought i'd check the oil level aswell.. it was about half-way down the hi-lo level (on a cross-hatch). WTF??? it was bang on high a month and a half ago. is this normal??

anyhow, i know it must be near "hi" i.e. very full, and so will top-up tomorrow. what oil should i use? (i dont have my manual with me).

cheers guys,

its an s1 111s.

Use the same oil as was put in at last service. I always use Mobil-1 which is fully synthetic, but when Sinclaires did my head gasket they replaced with semi synthetic so I had to buy a bottle of that for topping up. The difference between low and high is 1 litre. So if it's halfway down then put in half a litre (to be on the safe side put less than half a litre as overfilling is A Bad Thing).

It's normal for engines to burn a bit of oil particularly if they're Italian or driven hard but keep an eye on it. You may have a small leak somewhere, check the inside of your undertrays for oil.

Bearing in mind it was red hot a month and half ago and if the engine was warm as well it will expand even more.

As with coolant, if it's between the marks it's OK, just keep an eye on it - all engines use some oil anyway.

For a top up, use Magnatec or similar - it's only a K series at the end of the day. Some people use Mobil 1 but I don't think it's necessary unless you've had some serious work done.

Abz - if you're around let's not get techy again eh?

Colin Chapman said:

'Of course it uses oil!' Colin responded at once. 'What d'you think's lubricating it? What you need to worry about,' he added, darkly, 'is an engine that doesn't use oil ....'

He had a point, I guess.

just out of curiosity, has anybody tried/using the 15w-50 version? (for performance and race track cars apparently)

cheers

FYI its 1 ltr between the hi/low markings..
Mobil 1 tends to very thin so does piss out of some engines..(ask the Gimp on seloc..) as long as you use the same viscosity oil then as long you use high quality stuff then there aint that big a difference between them all...

Generally . . .

A semi-synthetic is fine in the Elise

however

Using it on track, or in situations where the oil gets very hot (climbing alpine passes for example) gets you to the stage where a synthetic oil may be of benefit.

Synthetic oils survive higher temperatures better than semi-synths or regular dinosaur oil (non synthetic)

The Elise suffers from high sump temperatures due to insufficient ventilation in the engine bay, this can kill your oil.

So, if you never track it and just punt it around the UK backroads it's probably overkill to use fully synth oils but will do no harm apart from to your wallet.

If you track it, use a synthetic, even better, fit an oil cooler.

Personally I use the 15/50 stuff as I find my engine sounds less like a box of bolts when it comes off track using this oil . . .
