The seven degrees debate is about whether the typical compound of a 'summer' tyre is as effective as it could be at lower winter temperatures.
Or to turn that around, to communicate the fact that a winter tyre is not a 'snow' tyre, but a tyre that has a compound optimised for temperatures under 7 degrees - even in the dry. This is very important in some central European and Scandanavian countries where winter tyres are common-place. In the UK, our milder and wet winters have really made it difficult to sell the concept of winter tyres. When it gets really cold, we just stop working instead!
The 7 degrees relates to optimium performance, not issues of construction 'cracking'.

ps: This advice comes with a product plug. I'm using Goodyear Eagle F1s on my Europa - if anyone wants a true all-weather tyre for their Lotus they are awesome in the wet! The Europa is 195/45R17 235/45R17 rear, but I wonder if anyone has experimented with 195/45R16 F1s on the Elise S2? We may run this test ourselves. BTW, The F1s are now OE fitment from Lotus on the 2008 Europa SE following testing.

I found the Eagle F1 GSD2's to be brilliant on my MX-5, but a lack of people having tried the same with an Elise put me off. Would be interesting if anyone else on here had tried it.Redlake27 said:

What sort of price would you be talking of for a set? What is the strengh of the sidewalls like - I use Toyo T1Rs at the moment and the walls are too 'soft' for my taste, giving the front a tendancy to 'roll' slightlyWe have a group buy finishing soon for wheels, and most people were looking at Kumho 31's (in 205/45/16 front), it would be nice to find an alternative
In the case of the VX most people avoid the 195/45 profile up front as it takes the wheel too far under diameter and the ABS goes 'funny' - I think there is a 5% tolerence to standard diameter, tho the ABS can be disabled easily
