Picked up my new (well 28k miles) S2 Thursday night. The play in the steering wheel does not feel good, and a friendly chap at Hi Q Kidderminster had a good look and concluded that the play was in the universal joint by my feet inside the cabin.

The link above is I believe the part I need..am I right? and could I fit it myself. I have a fairly spartan tool kit, but am reasonably competent.

Many thanks.

You'll see me posting other questions soon also biggrin

Hi,

Replaced my steering rack last month (S1). To answer your question, universal joints are easy to fit. 13mm spanners required and bendy back bone. You have to take bolts completely out,not just loosen them. Also remove one bolt from the other universal joint, this will give you the slack to pull off the worn one.

Hope this helps.

Did you do the work upside down with your head in the footwell?

Was seat removal necessary?

Hi all.

Thought I'd refresh this subject with a few twists in the tale.

Ordered the three piece kit from Elise Parts.

They sent me two upper UJ's instead of an upper and lower frown

This caused havoc on a number of levels, leaving the car undrivable for most of the day instead of a quick job, re planning collecting daughter so on and so forth. Less than brilliant reaction from E.P. with a very brief 'sorry' and 'send us back the wrong one will you?'
Anyone else had less than brill experience with them?

Anyway upper UJ arrived today as expected. The guy doing the work for me found that the lower UJ is about half an inch shorter than the removed original (I could see this when they were both lined up) and as a result he could not make it all connect as it should. I have a great deal of confidence in the guy doing the work, and he is utterly convinced that something is awry. As a result, he didn't fit the upper UJ and had to put the old one back on for now.

So, does this mean anything to anyone? Has he actually missed a trick?

Hoping someone has the answer. I rang E.P. but they had just gone home and so no reply. Monday now. Sighs.

Thanks.

Nick

Hi Nick,

Only issue I've had with EP after 5 years was an incorrect copper brake pipe (Lotus supplied wrong type) They were great, full refund and return postage cost. They asked me to supply photos of the correct shape, as Lotus had sent them a few which all looked wrong! I made my own in the end.

When I thought my lower uj was worn I ordered a new one from EP, found it was the same size. Maybe a supplier issue again?

Yes it was a head in the foot well job, both passenger and driver, didn't remove the seat.

Wouldn't be put off with using EP, I find there prices and quality to be very good. You may get more joy emailing Geary, he was replying to my weekend emails.

Cheers

Adrian
