Excellent news if you own either in good condition - seems prices are on the way up or at worse have bottomed out! - have visited a number of dealers recently and they are finding it v v difficult to replace their stock.

S160's have on av increased in value by £2k in last 6 months as they've become acknowledged as the best Elise trackday car after lots of adverse comment. Dealers are asking £20k for W platers in good nick.

Std S1's and 111s in good condition are becoming harder to find and although it's possible to pick up damaged/repaired & v high mileage Lizzies for sub £10k prices, as with all things, in good unmodified condition prices are def on the way up. Highly modded Lizzies are not such good news when it's time to sell on - buyers being suspicious of their history and use.

Exiges - expect to pay £22k private, £25k+ dealer for a well speced, 12k miler in the right colour - green and red do not seem popular. It is possible to buy sub £20k but beware there are a number of ex raceschool and well tracked and thrashed Exiges out there! Exige prices have remained pretty stable for the past year reflecting there rarity and track performance. Will be interesting what effect the S2 Exige (if it really does happen!)has on prices.

FWIW, Autocar's Steve Cropley reckons that the S1 Elise is going to be an all time classic, one of the definitive sportscars of all time (his words not mine -although of course I agree!)

Keep on smiling

Hiya Pen great to hear from you - am absolutely top hole at mo, and you? Better be sharp on the Lizzie front if you want a good 'un, prices def on the up - better investment than bricks and mortar - and much more fun

Afraid that's not been my experience in trying to sell our very tidy, unmodified S1 over the last 5 weeks. Maybe just wrong time of year to sell and was being optimistic with the pricing to begin with but have brought it down and down and still no takers. Will be taking our car to the dealers next week...

It does seem that people really want to buy these cars from a dealer though. Speaking to someone who works at the dealer we're taking ours to and they can't get enough of them. Go figure...

Chris its a total mystery to me why folk buy secondhand from dealers, I saved £3k by buying private - suspect Sale of Goods Act is main reason. Many dealer warranties are pretty worthless. There's little comeback for a purchaser on a private vendor. My original post relates to chats with dealers tho'. Good luck with your sale

I know! That 3k can sit in the bank earning interest until something goes wrong and then you spend it. I know what the dealer is going to put ours up for and frankly it seems pretty scandalous but apparently they have people queing up for the cars so fair enough.

That said, if you're not all that technically minded and like peace of mind when spending big money then that warranty is probably worth a fair bit, especially when buying a handbuilt British sports car...

Aggree - With the dealer /private/ warranty discussion

Personally went via the dealer route and got a good deal - however the small print on the '12' month warranty explains that its only valid if serviced at 6 month or 6000 miles.

Ok I should have read the small print as you cant expect a car sales person to point out such detail!

Buy private and keep a reserve !

Gfun - and I thought car salesmen were such an honest bunch

Chris know what you mean on the techy bit.. but I found £70/hr labour charge a big incentive to buy a set of spanners and learn to service/maintain the lil monster myself. You can download service/workshop manual off the web and loads of useful techy info on here and other BBSs

One of the first things I did when I got mine, but only as I have a Dad who's handy with the spanners himself! His labour rates are very reasonable as well...

I'm torn between the relative 'safety' of buying from a dealer and getting the better price from a private buy......really cant make my mind up......the problem is not knowing enough about them to spot anything dodgy

Pen - use your feminine charms and get blokes to do the inspection/spanner/donkey work - if you ever need a once over and 2nd opinion (on a car that is ) would be more than happy to oblige

Pen, you can always get a well known car. There are a number for sale on www.SELOC.org, so often we all know their history.

You can even check the sellers post history to check if they've had any big prangs they've talked about etc!

I bought private and haven't had a single problem. Saved me 2k.

Pen reckon that house is holding you back at mo - you can live with an Elise but you can't drive a house - sh*t thats sounds the pits, but hey best I can offer at this time of the day/night (2 bottles of Sauv Blanc, etc, etc and Claudia Schiffer waiting expectantly in the next room) - sleep tight
