I have an S2 Elise which I'm incredably happy with appart from the lack of noise. The one I origionaly test drove at the dealer had a different exhaust and an air induction kit fitted and sounded great. Whats the best way to make it howl and how much will it cost?

I had an S1 and fitted a K&N 571 air filter to and the sound improvement is great. It's a cheap mod as well as its around £60 and you can fit it yourself no problem.

I still may put a louder exhaust on though. A friends S1 has a Janspeed with a cat bypass pipe and going through tunnels that sounds the dogs bits.

Induction kit & sports exhaust.

Will cost approx 600-800 quid all in I would guess. Lots of choices though, and they all sound a bit different.

Must depend on the induction kit Dan.

A K&N with a Janspeed should be just over £400.

Sinclaires still have their offer on of Janspeed and Hurricane for about £500ish IIRC

that will sort out your noise requirements

Ok I wasn't including the K&N as it requires building your own trunking + airbox if you don't want to suck in warm engine air.

If you don't want to mess around with plant pots, the hurricane is the next cheapest followed by carbon fibre jobs at a lot more money. I've got the carbon fibre, and its very pretty but not sure I'd have stretched for it if I hadn't picked it up second hand for a song.

Janspeed is one option for exhaust. Probably the lariest sounding one. The lotus (magnex) is more expensive and I personally prefer its sound. Similar for the Bell & Colville (which I have), which is also more than the Janspeed. You may want to listen to a few first, as its entirely subjective. Trying to be objective I would say that all Elises tend to have a bit of a resonance in the exhaust system around 3k revs. This is most noticeable on the janspeed.

Having said all that the Janspeed is the most cost effective and most popular as a result.

Can'tpraise the Janspeed enough. Went for the Hurricane and Sports cat replacement at the same time (all done at Sinclairs) and I am very, very pleased with the results. Agree with DanH that it could be a bit lairy for some, but after it has done a couple of thousand miles or so it settles down fine!!

Just had the ITG carbon fibre filter and filter box fitted and is fantastic, the engine sound much meatier and lots more torque from 3500rmp upwards. I already have the Bell and Coleville fitted BBR sport exhaust which is very loud, largely cos all the wadding blew out years ago! It probably is a bit too loud for every day use, and it is difficult to be low profile in it! Most of the buzzing is from the exhaust manifold down pipe where there is a flexible element which has a gauze on both the inside and outside of the pipe which causes the tizzing. Apparently fitting an uprated tubular manifold with a shorter flexble bit helps and I will get it doen at my next service.

that will be a hurricane then. thats what i have, with a janspeed, and it sounds great, really meaty. most of that's the exhaust though, i didnt notice the hurricane making barely any more noise than standard airbox, IMO.

Yep - cos I just fitted mine. It is £88 (inc vat) from MBR (motobuild racing). I was going to fit a sports pipe - but now won't bother. This is quiet enough to sound legal at low revs but growls when you put your boot down and howls at full chat. Lovely. Pipe can wait - certainly till the novelty wears off!

I forgot to say that you can fit it yourself, choose the anodise colour and still use the original airbox pipe to point cold air at it.

Sounds great I think I'll start with a Huricane and see how it goes from there.
How easy are they to fit? I'm a bit worried about doing it myself incase I mess something up.

Do you have a link to the MBR site?

Beechy, i fitted a hurricane in about 1/2 hour. no sweat really, a bit fiddly but no point in getting a garage to do it. Check out the airbox user guide on www.race-speed.com, click on Elise and under the News section. This should help you further.

I had a look on that site and theres loads of great info on there. I understand how it all works a bit better now.

There is a Carbon Dynamic model on there that's only about £15 cheaper but seems to be about 1/2 the weight. Do you think it would give as good sound and performance as a Hurricane and would it be as easy to fit?

probably very similar in design, but i've not heard any reports at all on the race-speed model. In the end i went for the "tried and tested" Hurricane. I dare you to be different, Race-speed have a v.good name with good products, go for it !! (in theory it should be great, lighter and with lower heat absorption).

Hi Beechy.

Without hearing from someone who has had both thought it might help to hear from someone with the CDA box from Racespeed. Sinclaires fitted mine (the first they had done I believe) and had no trouble after reusing some existing piping and tubing!

Am overjoyed by the noise, it runs cooler now and has made a noticeable performance increase at the top end. And it is carbon fibre but is no way as light as the ITG!

Good value for money and a valid alternative to the hurricane!

Thanks again everyone.
If I was to fit one my self do they come with instructions or do you have to just kind of free style it? I'm quite mechanicaly minded but havent had any experience with working on cars.

They come with instruction and there is bound to be some guidance on how to fit them on the racespeed site, check it out!
