The question may sound like it has an obvious answer but it doesn't!!

I can't get the boot on my S2 open to change a flat battery. There is no resistance when I turn the key in the lock. I've tried applying pressure at various points of the boot without success.

I need to get the boot open tonight to get the car ready for its MoT tomorrow. Any suggestions?

Oh dear, had it happen on mine, had to take it to a dealer to get sorted. Took them about an hour to get it sorted. Unless someone else can come up with a way of doing it (no idea how they did it), it's a case of breaking one of the louvres that cover the engine I'm afraid (I was told that it would be the last resort to do that). I had it happen on my first day of ownership, house keys etc. in the boot, doh!

It sounds to me as though the lock has broken on your boot. The boot on my 111R locks\unlocks fine even when i've removed the battery to charge it, so there should be no problem with the battery being flat.

I think he meant that he needed to get in the boot to change a flat battery, not that a flat battery was stopping it from opening smile

Hmm, might have to drill the lock out?

I had this on mine - try turning the key and lifting the boot upwards with one of the rear most plastic vents. The latch tends to stick when the lubrication dries...

off topic but,

Launch of the Aston Martin Lagonda thingy, all electric
ever wonder why the press shot of it pulling up at the country house excluded shots of the rear of the car.......

Flat battery, electric boot release.....

it was being pushed

Not really, because the boot release on an S2 is completely manual, battery has nothing to do with the boot opening smile

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I'm still unable to access the boot despite much prodding, pushing and pulling, plus the application of oil, warm water, sledge hammer, etc. I believe its purely a mechanical lock unaffected by the fact the battery is flat. Monkey boy has emailed me some instructions (much appreciated) which I'll try in a bit and I'll let you know how I go on.

Depends on the model year. Later cars have it in the boot.

Used to be, but AFAIK they were getting problems with current drop off due to having to run it to the rear, so they moved the battery to the rear of the car, in the boot.

Finally gained access to the boot followng Monkey Boy's instructions (apparently they tried it on the Lotus production line), and have discovered why the key wouldn't open the boot. The lock mechanism is located a few inches away from the catch mechanism. An arm is attached to the lock mechanism and a wire cable connected to the catch release trigger is hooked onto a hole in this arm. When the key is turned, the arm rotates away from the catch, pulling the cable to unlock the boot. The cable had become unhooked despite this looking nigh on impossible. I've now squeezed the hook closed as much as possible.

I was fortunate this happened to me at a time when it wasn't a major inconvenience; when I had the necessary means to gain access to the boot. Could this happen to your S2? Checking the cable is simple, just a case of removing the four 10mm nuts then hold the lock mechanism to the underside of the boot lid.

Finally, I'm impressed and grateful that the guys at Lotus took the time to assist. I wonder if the production guys at, say Porsche, would have done the same.

Result. Though I thought all S2's had the battery in the rear, my first 51
plate did.

I am having the same problem PZERO had. I have a 911 Carrera, my boot release is STUCK! My battery is DEAD! Can anyone tell me what to do to release the boot? I am sure everyone knows, but just in case, the battery is located in the boot! I'll take any and all advice! Thanks!

Boost the battery via the 12v/cigerette socket (if it has one) or ask
on the Porsche part of the site.
