Discussion
Hello Anybody especially if you know anything about elises !
I bought some greenstuff brakes recently for my 1999 S1 elise and to start with they were fine but after a couple of miles they started to rattle everytime i went over a bump (i spose you could class a ant crossing the road as a bump in one of those) and its really annoying me!! any body got any ideas??
peter smiths sports cars said something about anti rattle clips??
but i dont trust them!! they are just after rippin people off!!
Please help !!

The pads are held in by the rattle springs, its possible over time they lose some of their springyness. You could bend them a bit too improve this.
I also found that the rattle improves with a bit a muck/brake dust. The brakes do feel better without the anti rattle pads, I've always removed mine.

There are two different places that rubber material is placed, one causes a loss of pedal feel and one doesn't.
Rubber type material placed between the brake piston and the pad is commonly usd to prevent squeal, OEM Lotus pads have this fitted. This DOES cause a loss of pedal feel because your foot is squishing the rubber every time you press the brake.
Rubber type material placed between the pad and the caliper as shown in the FAQ site mentioned does NOT impact pedal feel as there is no additional material betweeen your foot and the pad . . .
If you have rattling pads, get some of the pad buffers to fit as shown in the FAQ, your pads will stop rattling and it will make no difference to pedal feel.
On the anti rattle springs . . . sometimes tightening them can help, however they work by exerting force on the pad retaining bars, and on almost every car I've seen the retaining bars are a loose fit, hence even with the tightest anti rattle springs on the planet, the whole pad/spring/retaining bar assembly will rattle.
Years ago I fitted pagids, they rattled like hell, I got some anti rattle pads from Lotus and fitted them, they pads have never rattled again in 35K miles, it cost about a fiver, well worth it for no detrimental effect and silence from the brakes.
