Hello,

Call me dumb but can someone explain to me all about Trackers. I just used the Tesco website and I can get insurance for over £800 less than most places if I have a tracker in the Elise I am hoping to buy.

I understand that basics that it is meant to be hidden and then the police can track it if the car is stolen.

What will it cost me? from what I understand I would need to buy the tracker then get a "qualified" person to install it and then pay a yearly subscription from then on?

Where can I get this cheap? Where would people recommend I get the tracker from? any company you would recommend I use?

Why are they different prices? There seems to be so many different trackers about, on the tesco quote I just picked an RAC one, can anyone recommend a make and model? is it possible to get even cheaper insurance with certain models?

Thanks a lot for your help, It is really appreciated

i don't think getting it 'cheap' will be that much of an option, but from what i remember, its going to cost ( roughly ) £400 in your first year, then between 1-200 each year thereafter. seems pretty cheap when you are saving yourself £800 on insurance...
no specific details, sorry, i never bothered. suggest you have a surf about or have a look at some of the ads available through this site. happy hunting.

Under the 'Tracker' label, I think there are 3 types - basic (you call when your car is nicked, police go find it), Monitor (they call you when your car is moved without being started etc as well) and horizon which combines GPS and the usual tracker system.

I went for monitor which cost about £400 to install plus £100 a year (I'm also with the Tesco). I wouldn't normally bother on an elise (not the sort of car people would steal to sell on) and if it did get nicked by joy riders, I wouldn't really want it back.

Insurance Companies require a Tracker Monitor, the mid-range model. It costs about £400 and then you have to register with Tracker which costs about £100 a year or £200 for life. It takes about an hour to fit and there are a handful of agents who can get them and arrange for fitment. I hope this helps.

Cost 200-300 to fit plus about £100 annual. Try Adrian Flux for insurance as they quoted me same as tesco and direct line but don't require tracker

Some insurance comapanies Tesco included specify the Traker Monitor:

The Traker horizon is only activated when the car is reported missing.

The Traker Monitor activates itself if the car is moved without the imobiliser being switched off ??? on the back of a truck. Otherwise if the imobiliser is switched off then it reverts to the Moniotor version and is activated when reported missing.

How many car thieves use a flatbed truck? and as the Cobra Imobiliser goes through the EMU it is dificult to bypass.... enough said
