Please help me elise Gods!!!!
Discussion
My elise is un well and i was wondering whether anyone could shed some light please.
Short story is as follows..
washed the car and set off to brighton. Car started to splutter during accerelation so thought that is had some water in the dizzy cap (97 R S1 you see). On the way there it would stop wanting to idle and at one point...W.O.T would not accererate..just stay at the the same engine speed. got to brighton just...
The next morning started..ran like a bag of nails then died....very strong smell of petrol. took the dizzy cap off...no moisture. The car then failed to start. I then replaced the dizzy cap, rotor arm. still nothing.
Had it taken to Frosts in Shoreham. (I cannot stress how incompetant this dealership was) they said that it could be the crank sensor and changed that to no avail. they didn't seem to have a clue and after 4 days there they said that it could be the harness (£1200 to fit!!!!!)...but they were just guessing!! Great!! (+wanted me to pay £500 for a car that was still immobile) We even put the ECU from my car into another S1 and it ran fine.
The main trouble was that they would get the car running from cold (idleing all over the place) and it would stutter at W.O.T till about 3500 rpm then free up reving okay if very smelly (petrol). but it wouldn't want to idle or start at all when hot.
the coolant sensor was okay as it was only a degree out from the dash display.
Can't work out what it could be. have taken the cam cover off and had a look at the timing/rotor arm etc...mechanically okay.
it will turn over but just won't catch.
Any suggestions that you have would be gratefully revieved.

It sound's unlikely I know, but the coil pack on the K1.8 is inclined to fail/degrade and cause the symptoms described.
I had it happen to my 96S1. Took ages to diagnose as the coil would still fire a plug in open air. Changed the coil and the car fired up again like nothing was ever wrong!

I had a similar thing with my S1 - occurred after I ran of of gas one day (doh! ) Bell & Colvill look after my car and although it took them a bit of time they identified a problem with the "air-flow sensor" (don't ask me!) and replaced it. They never managed to link the problem with the fuel shortfall... but there was no question about it. No recurrence since though.
