Sorry guys, I know I should really be asking this somewhere else, but don't want the usual disection of my question along the lines of 'you shouldn't be doing this', 'I'm great, my opinion matters more than yours' etc on other forums, but . .

Unfortunately/fortunately (whichever way you look at it) I happen to live right slap bang in the middle of London, but have to journey out on the A13 towards Dagenham and then round the North Circular (A406) towards Edmonton fairly regularly - I've seen a fair number of Elise and Exige plying this route, and most at slightly more than the national speed limit (until they get to the cameras!!) - My question is - I also pay due attention to the road, but sometimes travel at a speed commensurate to the empty conditions, however, over the past two to three weeks there are dozens of new cameras (ANPR by the look of them) that have appeared - Do I have to memorise another set of places to slow down, or are they simply harmless??

Cheers

Good question as I too have to drive down the A13 most weekends. A lot of people speed up in bewteen the million speed cameras on the A13, but these new specs ones are different I think. Could be wrong but do they track you from a mile back? Not sure.

I live around that area, not sure what the cameras are, but the range on a lot of these systems seems to be massive!!

Previous posts have suggested that Ken's pollution cameras are being installed around the North Circular & A13 to catch vehicle coming in to the City.

I would be very cautious, I plan to get my Roadpilot refitted in 2 weeks or so, it will probably tell me on the screen what the cameras are (if they are speed related) and I will advise.

They're ANPR I think. Groups of four bog roll shaped ones.

And quite right too, the A13 seems to attract the biggest knobheads in the world in their uninsured BMWs with gold tissue boxes (oooh hang the racist...)

hehe

I think they are for the new LEZ that comes in next Feb. They seem to be springing up on all the major trunk roads coming into London. I expect they will be jolly handy if Ken gets re-elected next year and extends the congestion charge.

They place them so that they ping you when there is no way off.

I am actually all for it. Uninsured are scum.

I doubt these have anything to do with insurance.

(From website)

To provide optimal conditions for taking an image, an IR illuminator device is included with the ANPR camera. This IR illuminator is built up of low power consumption LED's, and works as a flash. Therefore, the power consumption is only about 10W while the light emission is 2000W. When the IR flashes, the camera takes an image of the passing vehicle's number plate, which will be transmitted through analogue video. As the IR illuminator works at an undetectable rand for human eyes there is no disturbance for drivers.

The FXCAM IBW_2000 is an all in one unit including a camera, a 2000 Watts IR flash, IR filter and a synchronizer special designed and optimised for vehicle identification applications.

The effective range of the equipment is from 3 meters up to 13 meters, but it may vary, depending on the environment (weather, sunlight, fog, etc.) conditions and the characteristics of the number plates.

FXCAM IBW_2000 unit includes the following components:
· High resolution ultra low lux B/W ANPR Camera
· Special 2000 effective Watts infra red illuminator synchronized with the camera
· High quality lens
· Weather proof housing
· Wall mountable bracket
· Internal heating with thermostat

The FXCAM has primarily been designed for ANPR applications (access control). However the FXCAM can be perfectly applied in many other applications where outstanding image quality is needed.

Are these camera's purely to catch the uninsured scum of this country or do they double as a speed camera aswell...? On my post above from the net they say they can be doubled to include other applications frown

I only ask as i drove down the a13 on monday and am due to drive it again tomo...

That is what I have its pretty good, but can't help thinking that SAT NAV offers pretty similar stuff for more or less the same £££
