I have an elise MK2 with 32K miles all serviced by bell and collvill but it has started to stutter on excelleration when the engine is warm. Is this my cam belt slipping????? I am worried please help. Can I fix this problem myself??? richard.quarterman@scom.com

It's either an issue with the ignition, or it's a fuel delivery problem. Not knowing the S2 I can't go further than that. I'm sure somebody else can help.

Don't worry about the cam belt, it won't slip. If the cam belt does jump a tooth or break you'll know because your engine will make a rather disturbing noise and probably stop.

If you mean the alternator drive belt, slippage in that may be heard as a squeek, but it won't cause the problem you describe.

Did you ever solve the problem you had with the mis-fire?

My S2 is now showing signs of the same problem.

Prime suspect with hot misfires must always be plugs and leads. Once you have checked these and they are not to blame, the fun starts.

I have had a set of leads go on a 1.4 K-series (didn't cause a misfire, however they were arcing out slightly) but had a hot misfire on my Golf Mk2 GTi recently and two of the leads were in very poor shape. Replace them as a matter of course as they don't get done at service time and they are relatively cheap.

You CAN get misfires re belt issues on a K-series. My timing on a 1.4 went gradually out as the belt stretched soon (a few weekls) after it had been changed - strange as I thought the tensioner would stop that, but this is what the diagnosis at a Rover garage was.

I'd replace leads in the first instance . Cheap and good practice even if not the problem.
