Need some new brake pads for my 97 Elise. Is it true that special brake pads are required for MMC disks?

If so then any idea where I might get a set by tomorrow? I am in Bath.

Thanks,

Gordon

They absolutely are! I think there is a story of someone who was almost fobbed off with putting regular one on - don't do this.

As for where, I'm afraid I have no idea, local dealer?

Having phoned lotus and a number of other suppliers it would appear that special MMC pads are required and unlikely to be available for at least 3 months!!!!

Therefore would anyone be able to comment on the merits / drawbacks of changing the disks to iron ones?

Thanks,

Gordon

I previously spoke to Simon at Brooke-Kensington in Oxfordshire. His opinion was that i would be mad to get rid off the MMC discs which are much better than the iron ones. Apparently, people are desperate to get their hands on MMC discs which of course arent manufactured any more.
B-K tell me they can fit new (Kevlar i think) pads including an anti-sqeal shim for approx £100 +vat total for the 4 wheels.
Plan to do this ASAP (unless anyone knows of a better option) - cruising down the King's road in the sun on Monday, I wasnt sure whether all the attention i was getting was because of my beautiful elise, or because of the hideous noise eminating from the MMC brakes.
Steve.

I now appear to be getting somewhat contradictory advice.

Does anyone have any experience of using EBC green pads on an Elise with MMC discs?

If you are unsure then the cost of changing the pads should give you a clue. A full car set of EBC are £68 and a set of lotus MMC recommended pads are near £200!

Thanks,

Gordon

Pads for iron disks such as EBC green will ruin MMC disks. End of story, just don't do it!

If you're really stuck for options you could consider replacing the disks and pads at the same time and either keeping the MMC disks for when you can get the right pads, or selling them for a tidy sum.

Strongly agree with that!!

Do *not* use 'regular' pads on MMC discs. *only* use the specific MMC pads sold by Lotus.

The surface of the MMC discs would be ruined by the normal pads, making them useless when using the 'proper' pads again.

MMC braking depends on a very different principle from regular brakes.

Bye, Arno.
