What works best
Discussion
Hi guys and I guess Gals, Im just about to purchase an elise mk2, however do I go for standard car and spend some cash on bolt on goodies (can someone let me know how effective this is) or do I spend a bit more and get an 111s. Is there much difference between the two in the real world.
Any help would be much appreciated.

That depends if youre into modifying or not.
Ive got a std S2 with a DVA155kit - puts out 163/bhp/140ft/lb and cost on top of std car was £1800 + sports exhaust/induction (£700)
the downsides are the Lotus warranty is invalidated on the engine and insuring is more expensive than a factory model.
On the other hand if you get a 111S you get 156bhp std, with exhaust/induction (must have to make it sound like a car instead of sewing machine) you will get 165bhp ish.
Pros - easier to insure and warranty intact ...should work out cheaper.
Both can be tuned for more power - say 180-200bhp ...but it gets a lot more expensive, probably aournd another £3K - £5K if youre paying someone and you want it reliable.
On the road 160bhp in an Elise is pretty useful. With the std car the most you will see with bolt -ons is around 135bhp ish. A std car is fine on B roads etc, but on fast A roads and motorways you will be left behind by repmobiles over 80mph. With 160bhp the car pulls niceley to 120mph and onto the rev limiter in 5th (approx 145mph)
Performance up to 60-80mph isnt that much different - over 80mph it is.
rough figures are (from Cartest software)
122bhp/128ft/lb S2 - 0-60 in 5.8 secs 0-100 in 17.7secs
160bhp/140ft/lb S2 - 0-60 in 5.0 secs 0-100 in 13.8secs
In the real world on elise runs etc 40bhp isnt really noticable on the road. On the track having better suspension/tyres/driver training makes the most difference to lap times - not horsepower.
I upgrade mine because I do a lot of motorway miles and wanted a bit more oommpphh in 4/5th gear when cruising. I did intend on going further, but if I do it may well be the TT route
Best value/quality upgrades on the market for the Elise are

For road use id go with a S2111S
For track day use Id get a new S2135R and pop in some cams for £500 to get to 155ish
