S2 coolant temps

Does anyone know what the "official" expected running temps are of a stad S2. I got a bit of a scare last night.
Normal running temp is 82 (motorway / free moving road)
Stop start type traffic can see temp up to 94-96
However last night coming home I had been running along the motorway nicely (82ish) and then ran into a massive traffic jam on the A3. Crawleed along for about 2 miles and the temp maxed out at 105 As soon as we got rolling again I just kept the revs below 2500 until all had got back to near normal.
I know the system is pressurised to stop boiling before 120, but I want to know if the temp should hit 105. At what temp should the fan come on and then go off?

Nothing wrong with 105 or even 110 as long as when the cooling fan operates the temp starts coming down.
The temp displayed and the temp the cooling fan is operated at are controlled by 2 different temp sensors so there is only a loose correlation between the two, also the digital temp display freaks many people out because it gives you far more information than you need, or is usefull. You really only need to know that the temp is within the normal range, not a number. Coolant temps vary quite a bit in any engine, it's just that with a digital gauge it's too obvious. ;-)

Fergus, cheers for the info. I've had a good browse of your excellent elise faq site.
Mine only does this when coming to a long halt after some spirited driving. I'll let it get hot again and check the fans are coming on ok and that it starts to cool down ok when they come on. Coolant level is fine when cold so I think I'm covered here.
You're right about the digital guage though, it's a little scary just seeing the numbers keep on creeping up.

AFAIK this is no longer the case on the S2. There are indeed still 2 sensors (and plugged in too.. probably standard wiring harness), but the service manual lists one sensor as 'Unused' and the wiring diagram shows a 'coolant temperature' feed from the ECU to the stack unit.
Of course there still is the issue that the sensors themselves are very un-reliable and not calibrated in any way. So they may well be +/- 10 degrees out..
Bye, Arno.
OK so I ran the car for a good time last night. Temperature eventually crept over 100, fan kicked in at an indicated 103 and off again at an indicated 99, with the temp falling to 87 before starting to climb again. So all looks well.
Only one question, does the std S2 have one fan or two? Tonykart you make mention of a second fan but Fergus you only make reference to one. Is it one or two?
