Hi all,

I've finally found and bought myself a 111s after months of looking, now I can't get this stupid smile off my face .......

Anyway I've got a few niggles with the car that hopfully you wonderful people might help me with......

I'll start with the most annoying niggle....
When braking at slow speed e.g. 120mph.... just kidding....... about 5-10mph the brakes feel gritty and Squeal...

has anyone else experienced this, or know whats wrong???

cheers

you need to bed the pads in - Nick Adams from Lotus gave some instructions for this a while back - something like

find quiet stretch of road !
accelerate up to 30mph and brake as hard as possible to a standtstill
repeat x 3
accelerated up to 70mph and brake as hard as possible to a standtstill
repeat 3 x

on the 3rd and last attempt when you stop hold the brake pedal down as hard as possible for as long as it takes for your leg to hurt

this beds all the pads etc in and should get rid of the noise

repeat as necessary every few months - depending on how you drive the Elise brakes do seem to perform better when given a bit of hammer from time to time

You only need to bed the pads in once per set of pads, once bedded in they need never have this done again.

You should probably get the pad wear checked, and you should get the disk condition checked also.

is there any hogh speed vibration when braking ?

With a new car should you do this right away, or put some miles on it first?

if they aren't new pads, then as mentioned above get it checked. You may have scored disks or very worn pads.

or

Are the discs a bit rusty from lack of use? If so this will come off in short order.

Sorry - I misread and thought you had a*new* 111s

if the cars a few years old then get all the braking system checked - the procedure above is for new pads...although giving them a bit of gyp now and again does seem to restore pedal feel

I was under the impression you had to run them in first for about 50km before bedding them (oooer missus) in. Would'nt the bed in procedure damage the pads and discs if they were brand new?

Sorry, I was'nt very clear on the details...

it's a 1999 S1 111s and all pads are fairly new....

I could'nt be a**ed to wait the weather to clear up (we all know what british weathers like!!!) as it was bugging the hell out of me, So I carried out the bedding in procedure today and it seems to have done the trick

Thanks for the advice guys

Tonykart - thats what Ive always thought myself with previous cars.

But the procedure above came straight from the tech section on the OLC BBS from Nick Adams, Elise engineer - he said just do that from new to bed the pads in - Ive done it every time Ive changed my pads and the squealing has stopped within a few miles
