I'm considering chopping in my 02 reg Alfa 156 2.0 veloce for an equivalent priced Elise. I will have to commute 55 miles a day which takes up to 2 hours. Am i mad. Is the Elise this user friendly and reliable?

I commute 15 - 20 miles each way in my S1 and it does it with ease! Now I have sorted the roof out it does not even leak, in the really heavy rain / hail this week not a drop has come through!

That said my commute is easy, nice roads and the twenty miles only take about 25 minutes, assuming you are stuck in traffic a lot that would be a consideration. I am sure there are better cars with more toys to while away the hours. The Elise is a fantastic car but bet ssuited to actually moving!!!!

My Elise is a lease car that my company pay for - I do around 30K miles a year in it...sometimes this equates to 100 miles (pleasure) in a week when i working from home or 1500 miles per week/4-5 hours per day when Ive got a lot of appointments.

Absolutely no hassle in driving the car - Ive got a decent stereo to cure the boredom ..and sometimes wish Id waited and got a S2 111S with aircon for thos hot days stuck in a traffic jam...but other than that perfectly liveable, reliable, economical (40mpg+) etc ...you cant beat getting paid mileage (and making a profit on it) for tear arsing around country roads for 4 hours a day

Yes, you can definitely use the Elise for commuting.

My commute is 23 miles each way, a significant portion of which is on the M25. Suffice to say I spend a lot of that time going very slowly indeed. Having said that the car behaves well in traffic and I've had no problems so far (only 1 month ownership). The lack of toys in traffic jams doesn't worry me because I know that when I get off the motorway there are some lovely twisty bits which are pure pleasure. Always arrive at work with a grin

Twit is right in saying if toys are important then this will not be the best car, but if driving is then it's the perfect machine.

Another 'ditto' here. I'm fortunate in that my 20-mile commute takes in some of the best roads I know of in this area.

If you anticipate being stuck in traffic for every mile of the trip, with no opportunity to stretch the car's legs at all, then I can imagine it getting wearing. Just a mile of open twisty road is enough to pay for the rest of the journey.

Yet another ditto, I also commute in mine, but i still find it a bit frustrating when I don't get a chance to 'use' the performance a bit on the way home (which fortunately isn't too often), though when it does, I seem to end up driving right by the house for some quiet coutry roads from time to time!

BIG GRIN!!

I use mine (S1 111s) for general work mileage and as my main car.

The seats are very comfortable, it doesn't leak (except when still with a cross wind and then its only a small dribble down the A pillar), the pedals are quite light and friendly (compared with my V40 T4). The car is quite noisy (I have a sports exhaust fitted) but it doesn't bother me (Another excuse for not ansering my mobile whilst driving (not that I need one, the people I work though expect me to answer it, I refuse!)), No air con, no climate control, but thats not why you buy an Elise.

I've just started doing this - I moved from an Impreza company car to S1 Elise as my own car....
unfortunately at the same time it became apparent that my 15 mile commute has become a 65 mile commute.

after 3 weeks of this my view would be a bit mixed.
the saving in fuel is great, and the Elise is just such a special car....
but the wind noise on the motorway is unbearable, and I think is a long term health issue!

however.... a chap at work has just lent me some Bose noise cancelling headphones, so I'll let you know whether they work.....

edited to add - winter will be the crunch point - is the Elise liveable with through crappy cold/wet/icy weather?

wind noise? - you mean roof off? I wear ear plugs roof off at motorway speeds, roof on its fine

winter is fine too - no probs as long as you drive to the conditions. I really do think that the majority of people that spin the car in the wet etc need to learn some more throttle control. ...maybe if they tried a GSXR1000 in 2" snow...and managed to keep it upright on their daily commute then they would know when to put their foot down or not

I had one bad day when its was really Icy and we had all the snow - I couldnt get the car off the drive (after 10mins digging it out) due to wheelspin in the gravel/snow.....so worked from home that day

Red hot in the summer mate. Roof up or down. Absolute killer as the hot water pipes from the rad run down the side of the driver. Bloody stupid if lotus would have thought about it they should have run the pipes the other side, i dont care how hot my passenger is.

I use my S2 to do the 25 mile journey into Manchester 07:00 am each day, and I car share .... the split is about 15 miles Motorway and 5 mile City the rest is open road.

Have great fun on the open road .. and almost pray for red lights in the city with me at the front.. best feeling in the world 0-60 and look in the rear view

Get impatient with the motorway though too many people getting in the way

The person I share with is quite large so you have to be friends.

My advice do it but remember all the guys at work will require a spin when you first get it
