two weeks into Elise ownership and I'm starting to go deaf.....

at least two days a week I do a 130 mile round trip, which is mainly motorway - and the wind noise with the roof off is getting to me!

don't want to drive around with the roof on...

thought about investing in a pair of Bose noise reducing headphones - anyone tried them?

I could just wear a large set of headphones and listen to my CD player, but that's probably not very safe....

motorbike ear plugs seem to be the most popular method. You can buy packs of large numbers from biking outlets and they are cheaper than headphones. Hope that helps.

I'm suprised you think it's noisy with the roof off! My car is much louder with the roof *on*. Loud enough to make me pretty deaf after a long journey - it's always a relief to take the roof off.

Anyway, I use motorbike earplugs. You're not allowed to use headphones whilst driving.

I have some of the Bose headphones - mainly for use on planes but they're quite useful to have in the office as well. I had thought about trying them in the Elise but they are pretty obvious to the BiB. Earplugs work for me.

Have to agree with Bonce on this, mine is my quieter with the lid off. I'm amazed when the roof is on it sounds like a complete bag of spanners, the only good noise is when coming off the power you can hear the gearbox whine, kind of like a mini GT (he says obviously in a delierious state).

Im the same - sometimes for 4-5 hours (300-500miles in day) at a stretch on the motorway roof off. I wear earplugs - I can hear the stereo far better too as the plugs cut out all the wind/road roar but let the sound through

...cant beat it...roof off, stereo on full cruising along getting sunburnt ! ....if only I could figure out a way of making my hands free work at 90mph roof off...on 2nd thought its a good excuse to ignore work

OK, I'll give the ear plugs a try - mobile hands free seems to be a complete non starter!

If I do get an important phone call and Im travelling with the roof off I have to slow down to 50mph and get in the inside lane...then scream at the person on the other end of the phone ....I find its best not to bother !

do you mean the soft top or a hard top?
I haven't noticed mine being louder with the soft top on.

Sorry, should have been more clear. I meant the soft top. I haven't lashed out on a hard top yet. I'm not sure I will as the soft top on my S2 seems watertight and warm. (not to worry in the winter as I have a full cover at home which comes out each night, I look after my baby ).

Mine is noticeably louder with the soft top on as all the engine noise and gearbox whine comes straight into the cabin. With the roof off all you get is the wind noise (and a lovely ruffled barnet ).

Which begs the question - what's the best hat to wear in an Elise?

Yeah I meant soft top too - I don't have a hard top, but I understand the hardtop reduces wind noise but increases boominess - whatever that is!

Pistonheads fleece if it's not too sunny (blatant plug for Ted). Otherwise I'm afraid I lower myself to a basball cap (worn the right way round) to stop a bit of the glare.

God this is going to sound awful and there's no good way to put it.....M&S do a good black fleece baseball cap. It keeps your head warm if it's a bit parky outside and has the brim to cut glare.

There, I've confessed it all now PH, no need for expensive counselling

noise - great with roof off, louder with soft top on, but VERY loud with hard top on. got geary's exhaust / no cat which exacerbates the problem.

can highly recommend getting some driving glasses (yellow lenses) for use when roof off & not bright enough for sunglasses - i've been hit on the forehead twice by stones & hate to think what would happen if i got one in the eye at 70mph.....plus the yellow lenses are great for improving visibility espcially when it's dull.

Im not entirely sure we can allow you to remain a member of Pistonheads. It has taken great courage and spirit to make such a terible admission, but Im not sure that there is quite enough forgiveness left in the world for such wrongdoing

Oh, do let me stay, I'll be an
I would ask the jury to take into account my other "crimes";
1. Only yesterday did I suggest that a 5 iron was not the appropriate instrument to blat a buglar over the head with - obviously a 9 iron is better. Just think, I could have helped to save another PH'er in their hour of need. They could easily have hooked a 5 iron over the bannisters, but with the extra accuracy of a 9 iron they'd get the buglar right between the eyes
2. Full support for Madcop in his quest to receive his compensation from Mr D Scrote
3. A general hatered of pikeys
4. I like nothing better than a good laugh at the Lacks Power crowd (well, a few things but that would be telling )
5. The fact that I used to be able to tell when my Dad arrived at work simply by hearing the car pull up. Well, nothing sounds like an old 911 does it?

Possibly the most important piece of "evidence" is that I simply love my Elise to bits and grin every time I drive him.

Overall I think I'm probably as much of a as most of us here and would ask the jury to find it in their hearts to squeeze that extra bit of forgiveness for my hat purchasing error .

My solution was to fit a carpet set to my S1, I also lined the cloth roof and it was much quieter, I have a log commute to work every day and I was getting tinittis! The sports exhaust probably doesn't help but sounds wonderful with the roof off!
(I am starting to worry about the chassis corrosion tho I daren't look!)

Sentence accepted. I'll try and get along to PF and am looking forward to getting a track day done.
