s1 engine vs. s2 engine

It has a shiny new plastic cam cover which makes it look like a toaster too.
Seriously though, it seems Lotus got enough budget to work on the engine management software to improve driveability and response a bit. Should be slightly better in real world driving, but not earth shatteringly so.

The s2 also has a close ration box for better acceleration, but is heavier for worse acceleration.
Seems to even itself out pretty much, you won't notice much difference either way.
Also, I'm probably biased, but I prefer look of s2, much more sci-fi than s1, although I accept it may age quicker as a result.
S2 is definitely better built and has a few more creature comforts, but s1 will be cheaper to tune up if thats what you want to do.
The hood is pretty good on both models - I went to Le Mans this year in a Caterham and kept the roof off all the time as I couldn't see anything with it up!
I am still amazed at how practical both models are, but then I came via an old Panther and 205 GTI, so am not exactly used to luxury in the cars I drive.

I feel the new one is too sharp and will age. I especially don't like the rear end although I accept it improves grip. One person said "I like it, it looks like a Ferarri" which is exactly the reason I hate it. I don't want a Ferarri, I want a Lotus.

Hey, i think they both look awesome. As i recall, Lotus has a thing for Renault based stuff, which in the past has proven to be crap(like the 5-speed stick shift in the esprit). The old Esprit S4S had a renault-based four, correct? Apparently, the Renault Clio Sport 24V has a 250 HP turbo engine. if somehow this thing could be squished into the S2's engine bay, then maybe the little elise could be spanking Ferraris and TVRs. If only lotus would bring the damned elise(in street form) to North America i'd buy it. A supercharged Sport 190 might have to do.
