Hi

I've been reccomended to vistit this forum by a friend. Ok, soon, I will be in the position to buy an Elise S1 most likely, I have about £14000 to spend on the car plus insurance. But I don't know much about them at all.

My main problems are,

1). I will be 22 when I'm in a position to buy one. (insurance)
2). The car will have to be parked on the street.(Insurance)
3). I live in Newcastle. (insurance)

So any adivice on what I should be looking for, how much I should be paying, insurance..... basically everything! Would be very much appreciated.

I need to get one around June/July as that's when the car I'm borrowing is needed to be returned.

The car will be used day to day, but maybe 10 miles a day during the week. So about 60 miles a week or so.

I have a choice of Elise, MRS roadster, MGTF. But I really want the Elise.

Cheers!

Get an elise, but the insurance IS going to be a killer due to age / location / street parking - unless you have some decent NCB i would guess you are looking around the £2k mark.

autotorque.co.uk is excellent for the insurance.

£14k will buy you a decent car, but note that prices are strongest in summer....

I have 5 years NCB this MAy so that may ease things a bit.

What sort of car should I be looking for, in terms of mileage/gae etc?

Hi, To answer the insurance question, I'm 22 and have just bought a new 111S & insured it for £1400 with Tesco who are currently the cheapeast (but not necessarily the best) insurers at the moment. I did however volunteer £1500 excess. It's garaged but I only have 4 years NCB.

Asda Walmart are set to enter the insurance market soon and should be about 5% less than Tesco.

I think the cheapest decent models start at about £12k. I don't know too much about S1's, but I believe an 'every day' car is better than a very low mile track use car, as it should be bug free.

£1500 excess can you do that? Or do you mean £150? I added a £200 excess and with no protected NCB and got £1200 for on street parking. This isn't bad as my other choice of car, the MR2, was ontly £100 cheaper but the car is about £1000 more.

What is the best/cheapest tracker to fit. The RAC trackstar Protector looks good, but it's abit pricey. Adds about £1000 to have it fitted etc. I was looking at the Tracker Monitor, but I couldn't find a price for istallation and it puts an extra £150 on the insurance. But it is £200 cheaper per year.

What do other people have?

personally wouldnt bother with a tracker on an elise...they just arent that stealable...too low value Im afraid.

You can volunteer whatever excess you'd like.....if you're someone who just doesnt have accidents then its well worth seeing how high you can push it...but always bear in mind the likely tab should you get it all wrong!

Yup, I did mean £1500. I had 6 points for speeding on the motorway which although 4 years old when I took the policy out, made about £400 difference. I'm also paying more as it's worth almost £30k rather than £15ish and has 160bhp.

My tracker was £400 to fit, with a £100 per year fee. Tesco insist on one or your car won't be insured for theft.

Wow!! £1500 that's a lot, the Elise is looking a bit unlikely just because of the cost of the tracker is adding to the total inital outlay, the RAC trackstar makes my insurance the cheapest but it costs £600 and £300 per year.

Which model tracker did yoou have fitted.

My best bet is looking like an Mk 3 MR 2 which is about £10 000 for a 2001 car with AC etc. But there is not tracker needed and the insurance is about £60 less. It's just the tracker that kills me.

If I can get an Elise for a good price I might be swayed though.

Mine is the tracker monitor.

Have you looked at the MG TF, or even a VX220 - a selection of used ones should be available. I've heard good things about Mr 2's though.

Have you tried elephant.co.uk? I'm 22, no NCD (expired) and am paying ~£1000 - no tracker - £350 excess. I do keep the car garaged though - not sure how much this affects the premium. Only problem with elephant is you have to pay it as one lump sump, so I had to go without food for a month before I bought the car ;-)

MR2's are supposed to be pretty good but ALOT of people get hacked off pretty quickly with the lack of stowage space - it makes an elise look extremely practical! (and yes bonce I know you can fit more than seems humanly possible into your elise )

Mk1 and Mk3 you have no space at all, but on the MK 2 the boot is actually quite big, about the same as a micra. Get a late turbo model and you will not be diappointed

Cheers for the reply guys,

£1000? That's good, I got quoted £1700 from elephant, ungaraged, which isn't too bad, but it's the difference between a tracker with Tesco. Depends on my budget.

I did check out the TF, it's a good car, and more practical, but for the decent one, 160, it's a lot of money, you get just about close to the Elise for that. The 135 is alright, but trying to get any TF second hand I being hard pushed seeing as they only came out last/this year.

The MR2 Mk 3 I can get a 2000 one for about £10000 private or £11 000 - £12 000 from a dealer. But neither of them are an Elise.

Just the insurance. So whate do you guys reckon? Honestly? I can stretch my entire budget to £14000 if I really need to, but I'd rather not.

Elise + £1383 + tracker fit?
Elise + £1763
MR2 + £860
TF 135(If I can get one) + £950

once you have driven the elise for a month poverty and repossesion will seem like a small price to pay for the memories she will have given ya!!!

Either way if its gonna stretch you too much wait, its worth it....

What is the likelyhood of getting a good one for between £11 and £12K? If I can get one for around the lower prices I can afford the Insurance and the tracker. Which will give me piece of mind. Is it a good idea to wait until Autumn/Winter?

Good idea with any purchase of a convertible!

Moreso with Elise as this winter saw alot going for peanuts as its not everyones cup of tea once the sun disappears and water lines the roads people suddenly want to get rid of them
