Hello all,

Does anyone have the dimensions of the rear speakers in the S2 ? Mainly width and depth in cm's.

The standard Alpines are garbage, recomended upgrades would be appreciated but I have tested some speakers, so have a fair idea of my own.

Also if a higher watt speakers is fitted, capable of a deeper base, is this likley to start causing rattles to the rear / screen.

Speakers are 5 1/4" or 130mm. Depth isnt so much of an issue in the S2. Ive got Infinity Kappa co-axials in mine - they are a decent upgrade from the paper crappy Eurotechs that came in later S2s, and cost around £60. You still wont get much bass though...you need a tube/sub for that. Although the frequency response on a this size of speaker goes down to aroun 70Hz, the usable range without distortion is probably 150-200Hz. The Alpines are actually not bad - they cost around £60-70 a pair so if you have these you would be better off adding a bass tube instead or proper sub/amp. I have an install in my S2 - pics here

Just as a follow up, anyone know the size of the front speakers in an S2? Also, best set up? IE: Mid drivers behind and two/three ways up front? Oh, and another one...... Where have people put autochangers?

Skinner out.

Hi Bogie

Will you send me the pictures across, my e-mail should be on my profile, unless you are at Donnington on Sunday?

On a different matter and reading through the many archives I'm still struggling to find the most suitable brake pads for the front - any rec's? Road use with a hint of track days is my style.

Spinning - your email isnt showing up

For pads try Pagids - pick them up at Donny from Elise Parts or Race-speed, they will advise on best ones for fast road - I cant remember the model number.

fronts in S2 are 4" (100mm)

I have Phase Linear CX4 co-axials in mine (highest rated 4" at 60wrms I could find)

Co-axial direct replacements are easy. If you want components then yes I have seen people mount the tweeters either side on top of the dash. Ultimate set-up would be some JL Audio XR series or DLS or Dynaudio 3 - way components i.e. 1" tweet, 4" mid, 5.25 or maybe 6.5" woofer in rear pods....considered these but £500 on speakers was a bit rich for me ;-) Ideally you dont want tweeters behind as it will upset the front sound stage, so go for separate mids, or just get some co-axials and disconnect the tweets.

Most people I know go for either Nakamichi in dash changer or MP3 compatible Head units (10 albums on one cd)

Maybe at Donny on Saturday - not in my car though as its in for repairs at the moment - hit and run in car park :-(

Bogie my address is kurtis.williams@lvl.co.uk

If the pic's are in a form of a j-peg they will make it throught the fire wall. If it's an attachment it will probably be filtered but still worth a go

May see you on Sunday, I also we be in the other car unless the sun comes out. 6 months and still have not had the joy of being roofless....bloody English weather

I picked up most of the bits over a period of 6 months in sales/old stock etc so paid something like this for the components

Fronts RRP £100, Paid £75
Rears RRP £75, Paid £50
Head unit RRP £350, Paid £260
Amp RRP £340, paid £220
Sub RRP £230, paid £80
Cabling approx £80
So thats around £765
then it was approx £750 for the installation, including turning the entire rear bulkhead panel into the speaker box (MDF front, leather, gold stitching, Lotus gold grills to match wheels etc)

So about £1500 all in. I spend a lot of time in the car - prob 30 hours a week, and have to do lots of mway miles so needed a decent stereo. It sounds really good for an Elise ;-) ...you can hear clearly at 120mph, roof off !
