I have seen a couple of cars advertised with Bell & Colvill conversions; what does this mean, what effect does it have on reliability, performance, re-sale value?

Is it worth having?

The B&C "160" conversion for the S1 has been tested to give about 150 BHP with a poor power curve. If you have a look in the BCBBS archive there are links to the graphs. It was costly and adds nothing to resale value. Later on much better and lower priced tuning packages came out.

Had one on my S1 and never had any mechanical problems with it up until losing the car at 47K miles. It was fun to drive but you had to work the gears to get the best out of it.

A mate has one on his S1 in the high 90s, the engine packed up on a recent trip but cause is not yet known.

If it's an S1 you're looking for then the Raceline is a much better K-based conversion to get but there are plenty of others to choose from and doubtless the Honda chorus will be along soon.

at some point in time when I win the lottery (or my boss gives me a 200% raise ) I'd like the sport 170 kit

some people have had good experiences...others have had poor performance - like 155 out of a 170 kit, poor idle etc - a search on SELOC will show a few guys that have had to spend a few quid on verniers and aftermarket ECUs to sort out these kits

there are a mulitude of K series tuners out there to choose from - check out www.dvapower.co.uk for an idea on what you can get for your cash .....

I've just traded up from a B&C Super 160 in an S1 to an S2 with the PTP RT-Sport 165.

My S160 was considerably smoother than the current car for day to day driving. Personally I found the 160 wasn't really any faster up to 60mph than the standard but after that the extra power makes a massive difference. I absolutely loved it and I hate to admit that I only upgraded it because I needed a bit more comfort (4 1/2 years in an S1 hasn't done my back many favours.) It's up for sale at Alexander David.

If you are going to take the PTP route - don't go for the RT Sport if you'r using the car everyday. I understand PTP are in the process of creating a 'Roadsport' version as well which will be much more driveable (Verniers & an Emerald ECU). My car has a very erratic idle and is quite lumpy at low revs, similar to the Sport 160 on the S1. Once it's wound up above 4,000 rpm then it's superb but not great for town driving. I'll be having mine upgraded with the verniers and emerald fairly soon.

Cheers,
Richard.

My S1 111S has a B&C Sport 170 upgrade. It is smooth to drive around town, it is relatively quiet at motorway speeds, and is fantastic when the second cam makes an appearance.

From my limited experience of the liz, this is a great upgrade, exhaust and induction sound are great when hooning, it's power delivery if good, economy doesn't seem to suffer.

I've not had the bhp tested, but IMHO it is significantly quicker than a standard 111S.

Just my thoughts FWIW

Hi Guys,

I just got a '98 B&C Super 160. After driving several cars (standard, 135, 111s) I would agree that the 0-60 doesn't feel that much quicker although .8 (claimed) of a sec would be hard to spot anyway. I did notice however that the Super 160 had much better pull in 3rd and 4th than any of the other cars I test drove (which is why I purchased it). I don't have a clue what power my Super 160 has but will be finding out soon.

Out of the others I preffered the 135 but this engine may have just been better looked after than the others, it went pretty well though.

Oh and my Super 160 sounds awesome when the cams come in.

Hi nochickenstrip, where did you buy your car from? Just wondering if it was my old car.

Hi,

I purchased it from Doncaster, the guy had owned it for 2 years.

Silver, black leather, 160 wheels, s61 A**

Was it yours?

Don't suppose there are many of these about?

Ah, no - mine just sold last week from a dealer in Surrey. Not the same one! Hope you're enjoying it.

Yes, enjoying it so far, needs a couple of bits doing to it (minor stuff) which I'm working on.
Taking it on a track day on Monday so should be fun.

It's got a bit of a knock over bumps on the front but still has original shocks and springs on the
front ( a bit sloppy too) so it's probably them as steering is sharp and seems to handle ok (does this sound feasible?)

Hi Guys,

I'm getting an Emerald K6 mapped to my B+c Super 160 Elise S2 K Series.

Could anyone please tell me the precise details of the conversion?

Its the cam profile I'm after in particular.

Any Information would be really helpful, as the more detailed, the better to supply to the rolling road guys.

Kind Regards

Simon

Interesting topic-I've had my S1 111S B&C Sprint 170 for around 15 months now. Up until reading this I didn't think anyone else in the world knew about them!

On the subject of power upgrades.

From an old evo scan I found on hazelnet, Lotus offered up the sport 135 upgrades for the standard 118bhp k series, does anyone know if that is still available at lotus dealers?

Thanks!

B&C super 140 was an interceptor
B&C super 150 was a pair of cams
B&C super 160 was a pair of cams and a quick port job + caterham inlet manifold plenum

Lotus 135 kit was a ported head (std cams)

any more?

The 170 on the VVC was I understand an exhaust cam, head port/polish & exhaust/induction goodies.

I bought my S1 in 2005 with the Lotus 135 kit fitted. Car goes exceptionally well with a whine off it like a supercharger!
