standard car will be slower than your MR2 Turbo.111s quicker as std, but limited tuning options. Better off starting std and spending the difference on mods...or get a car which is already well sorted.

111s are worth £14-£15K realistically. No way £17K. At £17K you are looking at an S2. At £16K you are looking at an S1 S160. If your friend has got his 111s at £17K I can guarantee he will find it difficult to sell. A couple of 111s went for £13K in the past month or so one of which was on here in immaculate condition.
Agree with what has been said, go for a standard S1 or even one which has been upgraded by a reputable name. Saw a B&C 160Bhp on a 'S' reg at the back of this weeks Autopsort for £12995. You will also find a fair few S1's for sale on PH too.
I personally have a 111S 79 and mods are limited, albeit I went down the Super Charger route, expensive, but it does make the car go rather fast!
THE MR2 TURBO may be faster in straight line than a standard S1, but on the bendy bits, the S1 is in a league of its own.
