Thanks to the fellas who answered my last post for the S1 probs and Mods.

Just got a few questions as my Elise has died again!!

1-Now since the erratic temp readings I replaced the two coolant sensors. The garage recommended to fit a sensor that runs the car cooler so now it runs max(in winter) at 55C and the fan cuts in at 60C. Is this too cold as I was told it is fine??

2-I have a set of 285H PiperCams in the car with a vernier on the Exhaust cam, which seemed fine until I fitted a QED manifold now the car seems sluggish(maybe the cams are a bit out??) and do I have to run these cams with the Emerald ECU - I mean I only just beat a BMW330CI to 110 he was stuck on my tail!!

3-After getting the car back on the road I was driving along when the car wouldnt go into gear easily, so i pulled back on the pedal which raised the travel alittle and gear changing was okay again. Probelm solved- No. The other night the clutch pedal started sticking to the floor on full extension yet it returned on half extension. Now the pedal can be moved to and fro as though there is no hydraulic pressure - I have no leaks and the system is bled. Whats the problem??

Please help??
Best Regards,
Matt

60 degrees is far to low, many people run a 82 degree thermostat.

Point 3:

Have you got a red clutch hose? Check the guide here for finding out if you have one of the old style red hoses that is prone to expansion:

I hope you haven't changed the ECU coolant sensor for the wrong one, otherwise you'll change cold/hot running mixture compensation, this will make it run like a dog.

If the fan cuts in at 60C it'll be on more or less all the time, as the engine thermostat will try it's best (and succeed) to maintain the engine coolant temp to 86C+.

Regarding your clutch prob.

Sounds like the clutch pedal bush has seized, try spraying some ptfe/teflon lube on it (GT85 say), this is a common fault on older cars, newer cars have a modified clutch pedal bush, which you could change, but it's a bast*rd of a job.

Oh, and if you know any double jointed midgets that'll help in getting into the footwell . . . alternatively, roof off, lie upside down in the footwell with your feet on the rollbar. Have someone nearby to help you get out.

Thanks fellas,

I found out the clutch prob was a few knackred seals in the master and slave cylinder so I had them both reconditioned. I dont know why but my car is actually running all the time at 55C as though a much lower thermostat has been used and only rarely does it go to 60C when the fan comes on, I reckon I need to get this sorted I think when I set my cams up!

Is there any other Elise owners from Manchester in these forums?

Sounds to me like you have the wrong Stack temp sender fitted. The ECU controls the fan, the ECU has a seperate temp sender.

Have a look at

www.elise-faq.info/content/cooling/index.php#CoolantTemperatureSensors

to check your temp senders are the correct ones.
