Ok, not a major spin, but almost sideways and at 20mph. I know it's been said before but P0's are awful!! I want to put Advans on but feel a bit aggrieved in a way at spending around £450 when my P0's still have plenty of tread on them - but what price safety?? Also thinking of an exhaust - is there anyone in the Essex area that will supply and fit a sports exhaust for a good price?

Hi, and welcome to PistonHeads.

Glad you got away from your spin unscathed. I think you should definitely get Yokohamas fitted ASAP with the bad weather on it's way. I'm going to have my second full set of Advans fitted tomorrow.

I first fitted Advans when my P-Zeros had plenty of life left in them, so I kept the old tyres and sold the lot to a mate for track use for £90 which softened the blow of the Advans a bit. I think you should be able to sell yours without too much trouble, people are always going to want cheap tyres to trash.

As for Exhausts, I would recommend buying an exhaust from www.race-speed.com or www.eliseparts.com (both advertisers on this site) and either paying a mechanic to fit it (not specialised work, doesn't have to be a lotus dealer) or fit it yourself if you don't mind getting your hands dirty (and perhaps a bit grazed)

If you feel aggreved at having to lose a set of tyres with some tread left, either:
1) sell 'em - plenty of drivers are happy with P0s - probably cos they have a choice and the elise is not their daily drive.
- or -
2) wear em out on a training day with 1st lotus - and you get a bit more practise too!

Try Sinclaire's they are based in Essex and apperently they have a deal right now on Janspeed Exhaust and CAT pipe. I haven't used them personally but have heard alot of good things about them.

info@sinclairebodyshop.co.uk or call Wayne or Mark on 01708 343904.

Deffo get the Advan's like Bonce says save P0's for a track day, the differnce in wet handling is massive, although I do love the P0's in the dry they are very progressive and when hot offer loads of grip. I spun mine a few times in the wet on P0's , it's surprising how it can just snap!

if you are in Essex then the best place to go is Sinclaire of London - actually located near gallows corner. They'll do you a Janspeed sprts exhaust for £350 fitted IIRC

Have all my mods done there (as do most other owners I know in the area) - they are Lotus specialists, approved bodyshop, servicing etc

website is www.lotusrepairs.com

if you are a member of SELOC you get 10% discount too

www.seloc.org

tell them Bogie sent you and they may give you some discount anyway :-)

cheers

Bonce,

How long did your advans last?
...and what sort of driving?

Just interested, and could be handy to know when to budget for a new set!!

TIA, CH

As it happens, I just had my second set of Advans fitted this morning by Sinclaires. They also did a geo check and few adjustments on Camber and Toe - jolly nice people and highly recommended.

My Last set of Advans lasted just over a year. That was 12,000 miles of moderate road driving and one very hard day on an airfield. They would have lasted longer, the fronts had plenty of life left except I'd flattspotted them both and they needed replacing. The rears were fine with another 2-3000 miles left but I didn't want to have new fronts and worn rears so I replaced the lot. We threw the fronts away but I brought the rears home with me in the passenger seat (bit of a squeeze!) for use at a future track event.

Bogie - That's a bit of a bonus.....cause I live very close to Gallows Corner!! I knew Nelmes of Romford used to be based there but I thought they closed down, I bought my Elise from Wilsons in Chadwell Heath. I think I'll be contacting Sinclaires tomorrow!! Thanks for the info guys.
One more question....this might sound stupid but I am a complete Elise novice.....if I get the Sports exhaust fitted, do I have to have the CAT replacement pipe? Does this effect the MOT at all?

I got my Elise from Wilsons too - its still goes there for the servicing as its under warranty.

Well theres loads going on in the are - we have Essex Lotus meets on the 1st Monday of the month at the Woodman, Ongar and 3rd Monday at the Anchor in Danbury (just past Chelmsford on the A12) ...sometimes you can find 4 of us in the Essex Arms (nr Brentwood station) on a Thursday night. Theres a run on this Sunday too...in fact theres always something going on in the area :-)

most of the guys hang out at the British-Cars BBS www.british-cars.co.uk obviously in the Elise section, or at www.seloc.org (South East Lotus Owners Club)

To answer your question - no, you dont need the cat pipe...just leave the cat in place. Some people remove them for a few extra bhp, and more noise...but then you have to put it back on come MOT time. You could get a sports cat (more power & noise, but legal) but these are like £350/400...when a cat rep pipe is £80 !

Just get an exhaust fitted...you will be pleased :-) ...and maybe a Hurrican induction too...just to finish it off nicely

may see you later...Im off to Sinclaires shortly myself to see how they are getting on with my car
