My first car I bought from my savings over 2 years, was a Bertone fiat X1-9 serie-speciale in 1981,it was a sporty red car(1974) with black stripings(origenal) its a targa with popup lights and low weight but also most cars from this era get rust just looking at it was the word...
And yep, mine was a bit rusty too though not that old, and I had to put a lot of glasfiber in it to heal...but in the end I had my first car and a sporty one in those days...and the girls often wanted a drive with me, euhm my car I try to find a picture on the net that looks like the one I had.
Well, could not find a real one bud here a scale model, that looks a bit like it.

A classic magazine told this: Fiat X1/9 was the earliest flyweight mid-engined sports car. Due to packaging problem, this kind of cars appeared as late as 1972 with the launch of X1/9.
So I gues I liked leightweight mid engined cars back then already

What was your first and was is your story...

17 years old, having passed my test I begged my Dad to buy me a car.

He did a blinding thing and bought me a Mini, only 998cc but it was brilliant fun. Looked almost exactly like this although I had different wheels...

Same colour, black & white check interior.

I loved that little car, drove it all over the place and it was a hoot to drive. Some idiot learner biker smashed the front end up overtaking on a pelican crossing and hit me as I was being let out of a side junction.

He got 2 busted knees and a prosecution for dangerous riding and riding without due care, poor car never was the same again even though it got fixed. Sold it to go to Uni.

A 1976 Mini 1000 (well 850 with 1 litre lump). Bought it from my neighbour a week after passing my (3rd, shame) test in 1991. Bit of a pleasant surprise as I had no idea where I was going to get a car from, with no-one else in my immediate family holding a license and even less mechanical knowledge.

It had rather awful seat covers and a slightly leaky sunroof but it looked great in red (the roof looked even better after a coat of T-cut). When my neighbour's dad took me out in the car to give it a test drive, with the odd driving position and lack of refinement, I drove about as well as I did on my second driving lesson. Image then the guy's horror when I dropped him off and announced I was going to see my mates!

Yet as soon as I pulled away it was as if I'd been driving for years! Even now I still think I drive better on my own (probably overconfidence but there you go..) Over the next few months with the helps of friends etc I put in a stereo, helped clear the carburettor with a healthy dose of Redex, sorted the battery, brakes and clutch slave cylinder but there were still a couple of other issues: the alternator was knackered and the steering column was on the way out, the latter worried me as anything other than filling up meant the engine had to come out.

Sadly barely 6 months later some scrote decided they liked the car more than I did and I never saw it since. It still annoys me to this day (and has made me paranoid about parking in certain places, although not enough to put me off a Lotus) and, of course, the Police were useless.

A few weeks later I was stuck with a knackered 1976 Fiesta in sandy beige. I really hated that car. No bugger stole it, either.

I see a pattern emerging here..

My first car was a Y plated (old Y plate - early eighties?) 998 cc Mini City E in 'Ermine White', black & white dog-tooth interior, single central speedo.
I loved it. Drove it to Uni & Back (Bournemouth - Cardiff) many a time and didn't break down on me once, although my windscreen wipers bust on the motorway once and had to find my way off at a junction not being able to see a thing! In a layby I managed to rig up a rope contraption out through the window to pull the wiper back manually as it would only wipe in one direction - It must have looked very strange to people passing by!
Sold it 3 years later and got the same that I'd paid for it.

I'd drove a mini too it was my 12th car in 1987 it was a mini 1100cc a dark blue one with big extra lights and stif suspencion? annyway, it could do about 160km/h and when you pased a truck with that speed it almost was a skelter very direkt moves and you felt the difference in wind? when changing lanes, also a bit scary at those speeds for those days and cars but also fun to drive...

Er... T Reg Fiesta 1.0 (WDO 474T) in midnight blue! Driven so hard the engine mountings broke - used to bounce the engine up and down when I changed gear I liked the idea of a Mini but at 6ft 2" - I always felt like I didn't belong!

My most memorable car was a Cavalier 1800 SRi - the engine had been messed around with by the previous owner (mechanic) and, as such, it was pretty quick for a 4dr tank saloon... Used to keep up with RS Turbos and alike

Good thread!

Nice cars at those days(I changed a lot in cars) I had one in '84 and '87 and 88 and 92(in the years) mk2 RS2000 (with the rubber? nose) great for going sideways and rallying in the woods(no longer aloud for many years in NL) fun cars and classics today.

J reg Fiat 500.

And before Gooby suggests it, yes my head did stick out the Sunroof. When we meet for breakfast on Sunday I'll tell you a story about me at a set of traffic lights.

Golf Gti Rivage bought 8 / 9 years ago I think. Saved my nuts off for ages, loved it, super rare. Think it's living in Chichester area these days... I think it will always be a clasic design, and great fun too.

1997 I had a 1990 Volkswagen Scirocco GT2 in Tornado Red. Had it 3 weeks before I bent it in a big way.

Replaced with an Alfa Romeo AlfaSud Sprint straight after.

Quite cool cars for a 17 year old. Paid about £1k in insurance. 8 years and 6 points later, I pay about £1k in insurance!

My first car was a 1985 Mitsubishi Colt Mirage. Really cool with an overdrive gear! That was in 1990 (I think!)
Then a 1973 Saab 900. We called her Puff the Magic Dragon. She would leak auto gearbox fluid into the engine and when you put your foot down she would disapear in a cloud of white smoke!
Then a Montego. Crap car but bloody quick.
Then a Mitsubishi Galant turbo. This was a beast. I would regularly end up facing traffic on roundabouts after the huge turbo with the huge turbo lag had cut in while still on the roundabout.

Then a '87 mk2 Prelude. Wow what a cool car, twin cam triple valve, double carbs. Had her resprayed and she was a beaut. Courted my wife in that car!

Then my first real car. The rest dont count. This car taught me about driving.

That was when I first got her. I re did all the bodywork and resprayed her so there was no trim, just blue all over then supercharged the engine 200 bhp with 150ft/lbs of torque and the crappest tyres...

God I miss that car
