Elise on Top Gear...
Discussion
I'd like to see the car being driven without a dubbed soundtrack . . . from what I saw and heard Clarkson was driving the car at full throttle through the corners, causing understeer . . .
I don't know how I'd drive an S2 but surely this guy's driving is not representative . . .
dunno

I watched TopGear on Saturday 11:30 CET.
But there was no Elise, only a Noble driven by Clarkson who amplifyed the suction noise of the Noble & Jamiroquai trashing around the most ugly Asian saloon of all the times
Do we get served with a different TopGear program on the continent, or did I not recognize the Elise?

ferg - after clarkson had made a horlicks of it -0 the lotus chap showed him the way - great power slides all undercontrol - his view was that they KNOW the car understeers they set it up that way.... you can have wider fronts fitted to dial it out - or you learn to drive it so that you tip it in to the corners and then slide it out of them... (onna a track)
either way elise came out looking good .

Sorry, Stig was hidden from everyone (or at least in Stig guise anyway) guessing that he might have been in the Aston Vantage that disappeared off halfway through filming the studio section?? Who knows, I've got a number of mates who are betting on Damon Hill though (and it wasn't him in the Aston).

Agree on that, good publicity for the Lotus, good wet course handling time (to say the least) . . . good demonstration that the driver is all important . . .
I am kind of warming to this incarnation of TG, it's innane drivel but some of it's humerous . . . and fairly non PC which makes a change . . .

I saw the program yesterday evening on BBC2 on the continent Patrick, BBC world is 2-3 weeks behind
Wow , what a demonstration of the Lotus man ! After all the crap I've read on different forums about the s2's handling, this shows that Lotus does know what they do. The car is safe and predictable as it should be for 90% of all elise drivers, and for the few who realy know how to drive, well it's the perfect toy. By the way, I consider myself a member of the 90%...
So, for every day use the set up of the s2 is just perfect for me, even if you are pushing hard ! And sliding sideways, it's all about controle and gentle driving.
For the diehards : change your tyres and suspension geometry and stop complaining !
And the best of all : the elise is in front of the ferari. I drink on that one

First things first: I've never driven an Elise. Secondly, I'm not diss'ing, just curious...
Whilst Lotus chap's demo was all very impressive, would any of you really risk driving like that on a track day (as opposed to an airfield) where you're in closer proximity to hard, immovable objects like barriers, tyre-walls, armco, etc.? I know I sure as hell wouldn't risk driving my Cerbera like that around any UK circuit.
Since 'neat' equals 'quick', according to accepted theory, wouldn't it be best to have the car dialled as standard for a little less understeer *and* sliding - when driven properly? ("Properly" defined to be getting all your braking done in a straight line, turning-in with the front end of the car weighted up and then balancing the throttle around the bend.)
Dave.

Yes, I'd drive precisely like that on a track day. Round snetterton, for example, although sometimes I'd want to be beat and clean through the chicane, at other times, I'd want to boot the back end out, as it's fun.
That's one of the reasons I drive an Elise, not a 355. If I stuff my Elise into a wall, there'll be few tears, as it's relatively affordable. If I had something I couldn't afford to replace, I couldn't drive it like it deserved to be driven.
Of course, I don't intend to put it into a wall, and 13k is not an insignificant sum, but it wouldn't mean I had to walk to work, or do without a car.

ISN'T THERE A PLACE ON LOTUSCARS.CO.UK THAT TELLS YOU THE BASICS OF THAT - LIKE THE GUY IN PRETTY WOMAN SAID [DRIVIN A LOTUS IS'NT LIKE DRIVING ANY OTHER CAR
the elise is in front of the ferari. I drink on that one

During Topgear Jeremy said that the 111s couldent be tuned - is he right cant you have the 111s tuned by any registered tuners?

Depends on the venue, the weather, how many other cars are there . . . I'm not good enough to drive quite like that, but I do enjoy hanging the tail out when I have the opportunity, especially in the wet . . .

Definately the case that the demo was far from the fastest way round the track, but I think the demo was purely to demonstrate to Mr Clarkson + others that the S2 can be made to oversteer like the best of them . . .
