In the same vein as the "spotted" thread, here is the first "Hello" to new members. If you have just joined Pistonheads and use this aspect of the forum say "Hi" to us and let us know a little about you.

Hi, just joined as looking for info on buying/owning an S1 Elise....thinking of buying one in a few months (Aprilish). Not that anyone here is biased, but I guess you will all tell me to do it. Only got a low budget....looking at 9k max. Anyone know if I'll be able to get a reasonable car with that??

Welcome! You should be able to get a reasonable Elise for 9k. There seem to be quite afew about at the moment. Your best bet is not to wait until April as the prices begin to rise.

Try the following websites for help and buying advice:

Thanks for the links....I've got plenty of time to look around as no way I can afford until april. How drastically do prices go up as summer approaches?

They won't be drastic, £500 to 1k generally as demand increases and supply drops a little.

If I were you I'd try to find another grand or two though and try to get a later car. You won't regret it.

Go to a dealer. Take a test drive - just for fun. Then you're screwed

If I take the test drive, I will give in, you are right. Unfortunately, can't see a way around doing it before april..... I do need to take a test drive though. Tempted to book a track session with one...though I think you only get a few laps if you do that.

I only had a passenger ride in Gruffy's and bought one the following week.

I couldn't test drive because of problems reaching the clutch pedal - so the first time I drove one was the day I picked mine up ( after pedal extention was fitted)

I agree with the above - If you test drive you will want one

Looking at the classifieds here, seems that my price range gives me a car with between 35-60k miles. Am I asking for trouble with a 60k car?? I hear conflicting stories on K-series reliability....and if anything did go wrong, what is the damage likely to be?

my car might be up for sale in a couple of months. It's had it's headgasket replaced and it's got 38k miles. But won't sell for 9k. Maybe 10k. But at the moment I don't know if I have to sell it or not.

Long term PHer here but only since the end of summer I've been a Lotus owner.
Lots of trips planned and hope to get the most out of the car, I have a readers cars thread running too.
Seem to get loads of love from fellow Loti owners on the road and little kids seem to think it's cool too lol

Been on the forum for a long time, I've owned an Elise for around 3 years, 1zz. I haven't posted much on the elise forum.
I'd made my mind up to buy one before I test drove it. Since ownership I cant get enough of driving it.

We've done a few road trips now, Scotland to romania, where we spend most of our time, in the summer I had to go to Germany on business, rather than flying from romania we took the lotus and charged the fuel to the company visiting 5 countries. I made a diy luggage rack, this year Im making a new one, it will be all aluminium replacing the plastic engine vents, raised brackets with an aluminum case,

I've been toying with the idea of trading it in. It was originally bought with economy in mind, now this is not so important, I wish it was just a little bit faster. Today I've been obsessing over the 220 cup, it's a stunning little car.

I was looking at a 220 cup a few days ok. I only went the garage for a central locking module.. If the weather is ok tomorow i should be test driving one. I am in two minds though. Is it really worth £30k more than my car. Maybe in a few years

Hello, long-time lurker. Just popping in to say I bought a 2003 111S in May 2015. It was an older car than I had in mind, but when it was a local, private sale, so worth a look. I think I'd decided to buy it as soon as I saw it in the flesh. The test drive only confirmed it.

Hi,

I've been a long time lurker - but this is my first foray into the world of Lotus.
I've owned a Caterham for the last 8 years, but just switched to an S2 Exige S with a Hanger111 260 upgrade.

So far so good - the car has seen some track action and comes with Nitron dampers and Avon ZZR tyres - having never driven a standard spec Exige I'm intrigued to understand the difference, and given that I want to use the car for 80% road 20% track I'm toying with the idea of reverting back to std suspension and OEM tyres. Any thoughts would be welcomed.

cheers

Will very much depend on what Nitron Dampers you have, as to whether it being worth reverting to STD, a lot of people use Nitrons for road, with little expectation of using them on the track.
Tyres are a matter of choice, never had the ZZRs, but if memory serves very track orientated. Yoko AO48s are that standard, but they are effectively street legal slicks. A lot of people use Yoko AD07/AD08s on their cars, a much more Road focused tyre. Not sure what options you have given the slightly different tyre sizes you have compared to my Elise.

As above, keep the Nitrons (run a little softer setting on the road) and fit some Yoko AD08Rs (205/45 fronts) - around £500 a set.
