I need (and want) to replace the standard exhaust on my S1 and was wondering what to go for.

I've had a quote from a Lotus dealer for the 'Lotus sports exhaust' (although I don't think it's manufacturered by Lotus) - £495 fitted. Does this sound right?

I'm keen to explore the possibilites of other exhausts as well. I'd like something a bit gruffer than the standard S1 exhaust, but don't want people in Brighton to hear me when I drive it in London, know what I mean?!

Advice appreciated, thanks.

Hi,
Can only speak from my own experience, but I reckon:

Actual performance gains purely from the exhaust are minimal, so you should choose by considering
(i) Your own taste re: appearence of end pipes
(ii) Your budget
(iii) Desired noise level (see FAQ etc)

My own choice of replacement system for my S1(cat back, which I assume is what you're talking about) was the Christopher Neil exhaust. Currently selling at £245 ex vat, must be one of the cheapest for a stainless exhaust. IMHO looks great, is tiny, easy to fit, very light. One of the louder systems available apparently - its a bit raspy and sexily uneven at low revs, but by no means silly loud.
I am very happy indeed with mine, but hey, what do I know?
Cheers

Indeed.

I have a Brooke Kensington zorst, larger silencer and quieter than the Christopher Neil but IMHO a much deeper note . . . The latest EliseParts one is supposed to be nicely made but loud . . . removing the cat converter makes it much louder . . . I run with the cat fitted . . .
