Just in the process of buying an elise for track and roads next year. (Decided on a Liz over a Caterfield due to "outside influences"!)
Anyway, got a budget of £15.5k and have driven both the S1 and the S1 111s. Preferred the 111s just for the gearbox but then I am coming from a MX-5! So the question is to all you Elise owners should I spend £13.5K on a S1 and then £2k on "bits" (susp, brakes etc) and get used to the standard g/box or just go and buy a 111s as is? Money will be spent on the back of your replies.

Depends on what you intend to do with the car in the future.
The 111S is a nicer package initially. A little more grunt and the close-ratio gearbox.
But the disadvantage of the 111S is that the tuning options (engine-wise) are limited to improving the exhaust and the intake, which should make it produce almost 160hp, but that's it.
The standard engine can be upgraded much more using ported heads, programmable ECU, throttle bodies, etc. to give up to 200+hp.
If engine tuning is not on your agenda then I'd personally go for the 111S, but if you want to toy around with the car a lot then getting a cheap 'standard' car and modding it to your specifications would be the way to go.

If your road work will include a commute or long journeys/touring etc... then be aware of how busy (read 'noisy/frenetic/boomy' the close ratio 'box is at motorway speeds.
Elise tuning is more than just motors. I'd go for the 111s, then look in to exhausts/air filters/quick gearshifts/tyres/wings/gatso detectors/timingequipment/hard top/carbon accessories/etc..... The list is almost endless.
And all the time your motor is still up on power over most tuned (expensivly) versions.

would be surprised that if tmie is on your side you can't find an S1 which has had a close ration box fitted. If you're genuinely keen on spending a lot of time on track then it will save you a mint to have had some of the 'obvious' upgrades done already.....
interestingly (or not) I found that on Silverstone GP circuit, the ratios on the S2 (which I believe are the same/very similar to the 111s) were absolutely wrong for several of the corners.....was actually a pain IN the butt in some respects!
