If its an S1 there should be 4 of theose trim screw/plug things holding it in place.

Two at the front end underneath the dash and two either side of the gear lever.

Hope its not too late....

My Dad's (Early S1 standard) was held down by some heavy duty velcro last time I had call to remove it.

This could have been one of the many minor mods we've made to the car over the years, but I dont remember changing that one. If you cant see any connectors holding it down, that could be it.

Then again considering the list of mods we've made to make it easier to work on must run into dozens of items (acess holes courtesy of a dremel, replacing fixings and fasteners with more convenient ones or stainless / ali components etc) I could well have lost track of that one.

ha ha, nearly. i unscrewed the 2 at the far end and yanked and it didnt seem right then notice the 2 by the gear stick which was nearly hidden under the carpets. All sorted now, removed the old cd changer wire and replaced it with a new one.. quite easy when you know how! thanks again for your help everyone.
