I currently have the same dilemna and was going to buy a Nissan Micra (1 litre, of course!). My ex-girlfriend has had one for three years now and it has proved faultlessly reliable and very economical. In my opinion if it is slow, front wheel drive and has power steering and servo brakes I'm not really bothered if it is a shiny new Golf or a six year old Micra.

Small and Japanese can't be bad :-) Her immaculate 1999 model cost £3k three years ago.

Someone at work just suggested a 1.5 dci clio (80bhp) - he gets 650 between filling up and i saw one on autotrader for 5k.

Micra is okay, but i doe 100 miles per day and would like to opportunity to use air con and i dont think they have it (i may be wrong)

Is cheap to run?

a) Low petrol costs
b) Low Servicing Costs
c) Low Depreciation

Most £6K cars will be worth only £3K in three years time, but a £1500 car will be worth £500, but will it cost £2K extra in maintenance costs???

Two years ago I bought a £350 Volvo 240 Estate, whilst not cheap on fuel it cost me £69+an MOT in one year and 7000 miles, then I sold it for £310.

You need to define cheap, then it will define the type of vehicle you are loooking for.

Go with any 1.4 rover car or diesel. As reliable as any other none jap car. cheap as chips to pick up with some toys in and comfort. buy the right one and all the depritiation has happened already. consumption not to bad and engine performance is passable for a small car.

My girlfreind has a Daywoo Matiz. 899cc !!

You can get a 1999 T reg for about 800 with 40,000 miles on the clock. Does about a million miles to the gallon, 101mph in fith on the rev limiter!!! and even though its small on the outside, its pretty big inside. So cheap to run, it pays you to drive it!!!!

Not really a manyly image, but hey. New tyres are only £18.50 !!!

Used to have smarts. They are very cheap to run, and if I was after a second car I would buy one. I would look for a high miler that has had new engine and turbo done. Almost all the early ones will have had manifolds done, and the engines get weak at about 60k.

I saw one last week with 80kmiles and new engine and turbo for 2200.

Get a 1500 quid Seat Ibiza, all the Volkswagen bits and not the price. I used to leave mine all over, left in the streets of Leamington whilst I worked in Germany for four weeks at a time. Always there when I returned, just cleaned the leaves off and start it up never a problem. Yes it depreciates more than a VW but it would never loose 1500 quid.

A loverly previously cherished 1.6 escort LX 1995 with just 25k on the clock.

Very amusing to switch between the two and enjoy the different ways people react.

Cost nothing and can be left to fend for itself.

The micra is a good little car and although not the coolest thing on the road it is incredibly reliable - mine hasn't been back to the garage outside service yet!
The Matiz is another top bargain and it will be cheaper than the equivalent Micra while just as reliable and cheap!
The Clio dci 65 is a fantastically frugal car and can be had around the 5 grand mark so that is another option for sure.

By '800' for the Daewoo Matiz do you mean £800?!! crumbs, that is good for a 1999 car.

Can anyone here compare it to a Micra? I've driven lots of Micras, but never a Daewoo. I don't give a stuff about image, I just want very cheap reliable transport.
