I'm trying to change the exhaust on my S1 Elise (some of you can probably guess what's coming next).

The bolts that connect the cat to the back-box pipe are so badly corroded that it is impossible to get any kind of grip with a spanner, wrench, socket etc and I can't see them turning even if I did.

Presumably I'm going to have to saw them off. Has anyone done this before and can it be done with a normal hacksaw or do I need something stronger?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Dont saw them off yet, That is the last resort. First get some penetrating oil (WD40) will do and saturate the nut / bolt. Let that soak in for a while. If there is enough to get an impact driver on give that a go. If you still can not remove the culprit, tap (wallop) the head with an engineers hammer then get some mole grips on what is left of the head and gently turn the bolt.

If you still have no joy, try heating the bolt. Be very careful, it is very easy to set fire to the whole car.

I should have asked if you can get to both sides of the nut and bolt. If so then just cut the bu88ers off. If you can only get one side ie a captive nut or bolt then try the methods above.
